Actually Paul, although MPEG Streamclip does sit atop of Quicktime it isn’t just an interface for it, at least not in every regard and certainly not with regards to all its encoding algorithms … we long used it simply because it could produce artifact free DV PAL AVI’s where Quicktime could not (this was eventually fixed).
I assume you are right with respect to its ability to and method of conversion for PAL to NTSC (havn’t tested it myself) but thought it was worth noting that MPEG Streamclip is at least not always just an interface to Quicktime.

Josh, for a quick standards conversion you could also check out the free JES Deinterlacer which apparently does a fast and reasonably good job of it.

my advice would be to capture as HDV and edit as HDV … but do set your sequence render codec as ProRes for the best of both worlds

given your intention for such a straightforward edit and given that you intend to cut with 3 simultaneous streams then you’ve got nothing to gain from ProRes as a capture codec

Try duplicating your sequence, then change the duplicated sequences compressor ProRes 422. Now try exporting that sequence as Quicktime Movie w/ Current Settings and Make Self Contained. That should produce an excellent high quality intermediate that the Colorist can use as source.

Another option you might want to experiment with would be to take the original sequence and use Export > Sony XDCAM and set the export location to the desktop. If that failed, test again and see if checking the “Recompress All Frames” option would force it through.

have you tried any other EDL formats or only the CMX? if not, then thats where I’d start looking
do you have any other linear or non-linear systems there that you could use as a intermediate system to convert or conform the EDL to something the eQ will accept? is it just the price or is there something technical about the Automatic Duxk solution that you want to avoid?

With your HV20 you can connect via HDMI to a low cost Blackmagic Intensity card … much cheaper than that HD Connect box. Not that the Convergent Design box is bad … I use their nanoConnect box ( which, like the intensity, takes an HDMI input) to convert from HDV and AVCHD cameras and decks direct to HDSDI video with embedded audio and timecode ).

I don’t have that one, but I do one of their nanoConnect boxes for HDMI to HDSDI conversion when dealing with HDV (using an HDV deck with HDMI out) and similarly for dealing with AVCHD from a Sony HDD cam … the Convergent Design devices work very well.
