Most pro’s and semi pro’s working in tis industry DO have large and fast storage systems … but I’m sensing knowing that won’t help you :/ you might want to consider investing in the latest version of Toast. That will let you transcode your AVCHD footage to any codec your Quicktime installation supports, so instead of AIC or ProRes you could try a more compressed HD codec like DVCPro HD

ClipWrap is for rewrapping HDV encoded clips that are recorded as M2T files, not for AVCHD encoded clips.
If you want AVCHD support you need to be looking at VideoPier HDCheers

Probably worth acknowledging that there are no professional AVCHD cameras on the market (that I know of). AVCHD is not a professional acquisition format and as such it doesn’t receive Apple’s immediate attention when working on their professional NLE products. People are going AVCHD because consumer camera’s are going AVCHD, not because of what a wonderful codec it is. As the consumer world moves to tapeless acquisition it provides a means to record large amounts of quasi-HD footage at varying levels of heavy compression on relatively small hard discs, and as such, not surprisingly, its an increasingly pervasive consumer format. That said, of course it would be useful for a lot of FCP’s user base (a good percentage of those million users are just consumers after all) and they surely don;t want to lose any of their users, non-professional or not. For me, I would be (probably will be) extremely disappointed if and when FCP 7’s / QT 8’s “major new feature” is native support of this consumer codec, instead of the host of things that we really need fixing, updating, implementing.
OK … got my flame suit on (the one with ELITIST emblazoned boldly across the ass) so have at. But nya nya nya, you’ll never get me way up here on my high horse 🙂

what’s your delivery medium? are you expected, or are you intending to master to an HD format? proportionately how much of each flavor of footage are you expecting to be combining? what are your edit system’s hardware and software specs? do you have third party I/O hardware?

Best way to upconvert would be via a high quality hardware converter such as those provided by Teranex.
I regularly combine Teranex upconverted SD material in native 1080i edits with excellent results, although much depends on the quality of the source. Compare well shot and upconverted SD against sloppily shot HD and the former is by far the better. In your situation Andrei, the rougher quality of the archived material should actually work to your advantage … as a rule viewers are more accepting of lesser quality where it is clear it is from an older source format. -
Dean, at the risk of coming across as just bitter and jaded, you know this question is asked and answered at least once or twice every couple of months and a quick search would answer your question a hundred times over.
That said, yes they are good for getting up to speed with shortcuts quickly but if you use one then you will almost undoubtedly become dependent on it. If you can guarantee you’ll always have access to one, then they are great … but if you envisage moving one from system to system and potentially finding yourself without one then you’d grind to a halt if and when you its not available to guide your fingers.
Favorites are Bella, LogicKeyboard (keycaps and full keyboard) and KB Covers (keyboard overlays)

This is getting blown out of all proportion! False advertising? Are you kidding?
C’mon, last time I checked there was an AC power point under/next to my seat when I fly … yes, in business class, but so what? Also in economy (if I ask to be in the rows near the front of economy where they have the power points).Seriously, editing on a plane is no big deal … capturing via baseband and monitoring on a reference monitor on a plane is the tricky bit. If you’re editing HD on your lappie in ProRes then plugging in your IoHD on a plane is not that big of a deal as the power points do exist. If you’re not editing HD in ProRes why on earth would you want to be plugging in your Io HD anyway?

Cheaper is not always a better deal but sometimes it can be.
