Hey Jan-David
There have been lots and lots of posts here on the COW and elsewhere over the last few years or so lamenting the stability of working with XDCAM footage in FCP. Some folks seem to have nothing but trouble with it … and some have no problem at all. Rafa and I are both in the latter category, but thats not going to help you if you’re in the former. Still, for what it’s worth, the 50 odd crews I work with all shoot XDCAM HD 1080i50 and then edit it in FCP on MacBookPro’s day in and day out and none of them have this stability issue, so you might want to test before you assume you need to complicate your workflow unnecessarily.
That said, no, I’ve seen and heard no evidence to suggest that XDCAM HD422 50 Mbs is a more (or less) stable codec for working in FCP than any other XDCAM HD based codec. Rather, most folks who’ve experienced stability problems working with XDCAM in FCP, suggest getting out of the XDCAM MPEG HD (Long GOP) codec altogether, and generally seem to express a preference for using the Apple ProRes 422 codec as their intermediate.
So, whilst buying and using the MainConcept codec pack so you can transcode your footage on export from XDCAM Browser is certainly an option for getting out of XDCAM EX’s MPEG HD (Long GOP) codec a) it may not be necessary, and b) even if you do need to transcode, then choosing yet another MPEG HD (Long GOP) codec such as XDCAM HD422 may not be your best bet.
Hope it helps

It’s nothing to do with your mic or your audio interface, the VO Tool in FCP only records single track mono audio. If you want to record stereo or multichannel audio in FCP then forget using the VO Tool, instead you’ll need to set up an appropriate Audio Capture preset to use in the “Log and Capture” interface.

Hey Steven
Probably too obvious, but have you tried the cards and adapter from the A cam in the B cam? You might be able to isolate the problem or fault as being with the specific media and/or SDHD adapter. Also, have you updated your camera firmware anywhere along the way?

Sounds like your thumbnail / poster frame cache may have corrupted or lost its references or something. You could try reinserting the original disk and then re-fetching the clip data (File menu). Or maybe more convenient would be just to save new poster frames for each clip by selecting each clip in turn and pressing “Control P” (Clip menu > Set Poster Frame).
Hope it helps
AndyPs Whilst you’re about it, you might want to try the update to XDCAM Transfer 2.13.0, maybe that will chase those thumbnails back out of wherever they are hiding.

Hi Cees
This request pops up once in a while. As noted, FCP doesn’t directly support native non-standard frame rate editing, however you can force it to do so if you’re willing to get your hands a bit dirty with FCP’s XML format. Basically you just set up a project with all the settings you need (except frame rate obviously), then export that as an XML file. Next you open the exported XML file in a text editor and manually change the sequence’s rate >> timebase property and timecode >> rate >> timebase property (to 12 … or whatever’s needed). Import that XML back into FCP (ignore any errors) and the new sequence created will be the one you’re after.
Hope it helps

Hah! I think step 9) might have been something about christening the effect with a cold one from the fridge. Seriously tho, My mate Luca Bono built a really cool flicker filter which I highly recommend … grab it here –>

Without the actual settings details then it’ll be a little hard to guess what was wrong … did you maybe have the iLink output port enabled, seem to remember the downconversion works with either/or but not both. You’ll want to double check that info a I don’t have an EX here, just seem to remember having a similar but opposite problem once before.
For what its worth, this kind of thing is one of the reason why we added Matrox MXO / MXO2 boxes to all our field kits … no more missed feeds.

[W. Lawrence Stevens] “(I’m sorry, I can’t use Shotput in the field… I need to use Windows 7 folder copy and make it work reliably somehow.)”
Sorry, just not seeing why you can’t use XDCAM Browser, it’s just putting a GUI on the copy function, works just fine on Windows, and offers a CRC check option after copy … why so dead set on using a dodgy folder copy instead?

Hi Chris
I don’t personally remember any special mention of “soon” for releasing anything, but certainly it was mentioned that Sony had the SDK and were going to produce something and that we would be told more “shortly” *that was only a couple of weeks or so ago) … am sure Ian will update us with news as soon as theres news worth telling.
