  • The Animation codec is 8 bit only. Regardless of how you set your bpc in AE the end result will be 8 bit and the file size should be the same. 32-bit is overkill for just about everything and will just increase your render time.

But, even when rendering in 8-bit, why would the file size double when all I’m doing is some relatively simple color correction? (My relative ignorance of the Animation codec might be part of the answer.)

I suspect that the source file you are working with was compressed somehow differently than the exports you are creating. The Animation Codec creates massive files. Really Really large files. How long and big is your source file and how big are your exports coming out? A couple gig’s is no sweat for Animation in a hurry.

There’s not a lot of setting you can twiddle with using the animation codec to make the file smaller. Make sure it’s set to Millions of Color’s instead of Millions+ unless you need an alpha channel.

  • The footage I’m receiving is .mov DV Animation
Im guessing you mean that your footage is DV sized (720×480) using the Animation codec.
    Is that correct?
DV is a compression scheme own it’s own so it can’t be both DV and Animation.

I just did a 4-layer composition with masking for secondary correction, and the file size, as you might imagine, is roughly 4 times the size of the original.

I would not expect the number of layers in my composition to have any affect on my final file size. Are you rendering these layers out separately to be composited at a later date?

  • If your trying to add the Text animation presets to an image it won’t work. They only work on text. Effects should work just fine, but not animation presets.

July 22, 2010 at 4:28 pm in reply to: Video ouput for iPad ADVICE REQUIRED ASAP

I have encoded some 720p stuff for the ipad. Even though that is how it is listed in the specs your 1280×720 gets scaled to 1024×576 to fit within the 1024×768 screen.

So there is no point in going over 1024×576, and you will get a smaller file out of it.

I have not done any further tests on it but 1024×768 might be the answer to actually getting a full screen video. The big question is the Ipad capable of playing such a wonky aspect ratio even though that is it’s screen size? I don’t know. There might be some better answers to this over at the compression forum.

If your not going to have the ipad in front of you to do some test I would stick to 1024×576.

Render lossless from AE and then use compressor or media encoder to make your file.
If your using compressor the HD Apple TV preset dialed down to about 2.8Mbps works well.

  • Do you have 3d layers with motion blur enabled? By default AE does not preview motion blur you have to turn it on. It’s in the upper right hand corner of your composition window. The button looks like 4 lines with an arrow next to it.

Are you enabling Frame rendering frame the render Q? The default is progressive.

July 21, 2010 at 5:42 pm in reply to: Mask won’t work

I would probably approach this by duplicate my footage and masking the charector rather than the particles. Place the foreground elements on top of the particles in your stacking order.

The problem with precomposing particular layers is that you lose the connection between your particles and camera. This connection is necessary for accurate motion blur and depth of field. Probably not an issue with your comp but something to keep in mind.

    Hi Matt,

We might need you to describe in greater detail what your trying to do and how your trying to do it, but Ill take a stab in the dark.

Your appling a mask to a solid with Particular on it. It does not work that way Im guessing because particular creates it’s own 3D math inside the plugin and overlays that information on a 2D AE layer. Most of the “illusion of 3D” effects do not respect the typical render order rules.

There are other methods like obscuration and lumma mats that might be more appropriate for what your trying to do. What are you trying to do?

July 20, 2010 at 4:05 pm in reply to: correct way to prepaire footage for tv

I use Sony’s but Im sure there are a ton of different lines out there that would work fine. The NTSC versions are somewhat affordable. I have a 20 inch Sony Trinitron for NTSC stuff that has worked great for about 10 years now.

HD Pro monitors are more expensive. A starter 17″ is going to run at least 2,000-2,500

Most of them have a “blue only” mode which is what allows you to calibrate it using bars from your editing app.

I would do a search for “broadcast monitor” here and over on the FCP/editing forums for some specific recommendations.

July 19, 2010 at 10:00 pm in reply to: After Effects rendering trouble in preview?

What version of After Effects and operating system are you running?
What sort of effects are you applying? Any plugin’s?

It could not hurt to try deleting your preferences (other than you lose your preferences of course)

They should be here useres/[username]/library/preferences/adobe/after effects. You can back them up to a different location and then delete the original. AE will rebuild them to the default when your relaunch.
