“The art and Science of Digital Compositing” by Ron Brinkman is an excellent book.
Its considered the “bible” amoungst compositors but I think every editor should read it if they are interested in compositing or not. If anything just for the first 3 chapters. Chapter two alone explains:
Pixels, components, and channels
Spatial resolution
Bit Depth
Normalized values
The HSV color Representation
Digital Image File Formats
Vendor Implementations of File Formats
Compression
Choosing a File Format
and
Nonlinear Color Spaces
Its not an easy read, but if you want a indepth understand of the files you are working with and how to manipulate them its a must have.
The days when an editor can just be an artist and not a geek are over (g)
