I love the dinosaur debate — I taught myself FCP 1 at ABC News when the union editors were negotiating themselves out of a career – I was a producer/correspondent – (they gave up everything computer based because they felt they only dealt with the heavy metal equipment — that didn’t work well for them)

I saw the future was producer editors – photographer editors — no one person does one job

When i began my own production company i networked with a group of like minded pros that once did just one job at the network level — we’re all still working and generating projects — the folks who insisted they’ll stay “specialized” for the most part had to find other careers

As for kids being able to edit circles around us with FCP X — call me when that happens — there’s been a dozen times that an in house corporate video client said – “we’re good – we have someone editing on FCP X now” ..and then came back after the botched, mediocre, lousy edit and said “can you fix this?” It cost them twice as much than if they’d just let a professional do it once.

It isn’t the NLE – its the experience and creativity of the person on the keyboard — and you better stay 3 steps ahead of the game, teach yourself new skills (Motion graphics for someone else? Nope – start learning) Those are the rare pros that don’t seem to ever want for work.

LA New York Network scripted shows – still primarily avid — I work at ABC News and they’re still using AVID for broadcast news programs but dipping a toe in Adobe and FCP X for field work with one man band producer/ shooter / reporters

Premiere’s making inroads in “Hollywood” as evidenced by scores of films cut on that NLE at Sundance this year — primarily because it’s an easy switch for FCP 7 editors – in fact you can set up Premiere to act almost identically to FCP 7 down to the keyboard shortcuts..

I know Voice of America has switched most of their aging FCP 7 seats to Premiere (I helped train some of the editors there)

FCP X is an easy decision for corporations and editors not necessarily coming from another NLE……harder for legacy editors to wrap their noggins around Apple’s new way of doing things and a frustrating (for legacy editors) lack of tracks for mixing (it can be done with roles but it’s a bit of a Texas two step compared to the straight forward it’s right in front of you way other NLE’s do this)

All in all I use them all…..prefer Premiere…but occasionally need Motion and FCP X to do something …and AVID when a client has a project already cut on that NLE —

Frankly students need to know them all today — if they’re heading to Feature work — AVID and Premiere seem to be the dominant players.

I did disagree that it was “not broken” from the beginning and offered a list of what didn’t work……. you’ve embraced the Apple way of doing things — again good for you — there are many of us who don’t like it, don’t find it faster or more productive and offer our ideas too. Happy editing!

PS Bill Davis — re FCP X “not broken” from the beginning — a blast from the past from Conan O’Brien’s editors who also thought it was “perfect” from the start
