What version of Premiere?
Are you using the Media Browser to import your media into your project folders?

Can you create a new project and through the Media Browser, re-import your old sequence with the ongoing clips. Copy that old sequence of clips into a new sequence and get rid of the old one. See if the new sequence plays smoother now.
Where is your media? San, NAS, internal drives, external drives?
What codecs of footage?
Are your After Effects graphics exported as Animation codec or ProRes 4444 (includes the alpha) If animation codec, try rendering out ProRes 4444 versions and importing into your project. Animation codec is no longer supported under AV Foundation OS’s as Apple Deprecated the Quicktime Framework.

Hi Kevin,
What are users supposed to do when you have an archived project that was started and finished in 7.2.2 and a Client or Producer wants to go back to the project and you are running 8.2 now? Is everyone supposed to keep a computer locked at 7.2.2 just because Premiere archived projects cannot go forward into 8.2 properly? I fully understand changes are made under the hood from 7.2.2 – 8.2, but not allowing projects to carry forward properly for users is asking for a whole lot of problems and un-needed troubleshooting.

Question about one of your suggestions:
– Make sure your Network/Shared Storage not set to “full duplex”Just curious what is the reasoning for this change as we use full duplex when setting it to Jumbo Frames.

All your pans are to the center. This is ok for CH 1 & 2 full mix. You need to pan to the left for channel 3 and pan to the right for channel 4. This will force your stems to write to the correct channel. Based on your original post you need to mix down everything to just four channels. CH 3 need to be every dialogue track assigned to 3 + 4, but also panned to the left to force it to go to channel 3. CH 4 needs to be every track of Music & Nats assigned to 3 + 4, but also panned to the right to force it to go to channel 4. This should include tracks 5+6 if they are Nats or Music. Assign them to 3+4 and just pan them to the right so they all go into channel 4.

Your current machine did it’s task well for the past few years with FCP and its RAM limitations. Moving to Premiere you have a couple of options. Buy a 6,8, or 12 core New Mac Pro with, 1TB SSD, D500 or D700 graphics card, add some adapters for those old Firewire drives and get back to work. Just depends on the size of your wallet and how high you want to go. I’ve chosen the middle of the road version (6 Core) for a bunch of our edit bays and they seem to handle Premiere, After Effects and any encoding thrown at them. I’ve extended the life of our older Mac Pro Towers by purchasing the following: 2 512GB SSD’s, 1 for OS, 1 for renders & cache files, two 3-4TB SATA drives for internal media if you are not on a SAN or external raid. Throw in a Nvidia K4000 graphics card (yes it is showing it’s age, but does the trick for now) and 32 GB of Ram from OWC. You could go higher on the graphics card to a Nvidia K5000 or higher, but you are then looking at $1,700+ for just the graphics card alone. You can also look into swapping out the old tower CPU tray from 6 core to a 12 core with OWC ( https://eshop.macsales.com/shop/turnkey/MacPro/2010_Xeon_Processor ). The new Mac Pro’s are nice, but I’ve seen issues with Premiere and Yosemite and even Mavericks OS and the OPEN CL drivers. Even with Apple updating things under the hood, it seems intermittent at times which ads to the frustration when trouble shooting the new Mac Pro systems. You didn’t mention if you were using AJA or BMD iO hardware? That ads another level of cost if you want to upgrade those cards or boxes to work with a new mac pro. Some people are having good luck with just maxing out a new 5K iMac, but best to test your workflows before you buy.

2nd Erik’s recommendations. First couple we bought for work, we did 6 Core, 16GB Ram 256SSD, D500’s. to test the waters Did a 4K multi cam on it with Thunderbolt Pegasus 2 12TB raid. Ran well even with lower hardware editing four 4K streams, but dropped in after market 32GB RAM. For heavy graphics work I’ve bumped up to the 8 core, 1TB SSD, 32GB Ram, but stayed with D500’s. Have not tested the D700 side of things as early on I saw to many people complaining about them and the OPEN CL drivers. Hopefully that will continue to improve w/ OS updates. For now 6 core, 32GB Ram, 1 TB SSD and D500’s is what I would buy again. Not having any spare drives internally forces you to push everything to external TBolt / USB 3.0 drive or SAN / NAS. I wonder when we will see new chip speeds and GPU updates?

Try changing the audio track layout to 4 mono tracks vs single track and recheck your export.

You’re on a Mac not a windows box? If windows, you cannot export to ProRes without 3rd party solution.

Couple setting changes. This was on our iO4K and also tried with our older Kona 3 card.
Under Premiere Audio Hardware tab: Change Buffer size to 512.
Under Premiere Playback tab: AJA Setup: Change video format to Match Sequence, and buffer mode set to Minimum.
Under AJA Control Panel: Audio set to +12dbu FSD, Format – pixel format set to YUV-8.The audio setup change in the AJA Control Panel was specific for our 5.1 concert. It might not effect you if you are dealing with just a stereo mix. We were getting over modulated audio and changing this setting for 5.1 seems to fix that and make the output sound better on our 5.1 speakers.
