ok nils, i’m up for anything. is this done with FCP filters? you got some instructions to lay on me? the only thing i’m doing at this point is scaling the video down to 30%, so there’s no before, if you know what i mean-andwon
“add a bit of gaussian monchromatic noise to the image in the step before whatever it is you do that causes banding”

Um,
I captured digibeta in 10bit PAL. scaled it to 30% in a 10bit PAL timeline. I don’t really see any improvement, slight if any improvement at all.
I’ll try another capture monday with some other footage to verify.my small mind is quite amazed that it’s not possible to scale video downward without distortion in the 21st century with FCP6.
thanx for the interest and help

Many thanks for your help kind sirs; especially for your patience.
jerry i tried the normal, fastest (linear), and best with very little difference.
i’ve never experienced (or noticed?) this issue in previous versions of final cut.
i guess it’s a bit dissapointing since 2 continuous streams at 30%
will be playing throughout the program.is the only solution to having decent looking vision for this program, is to reshoot and cut it in 10bit? oucheehuahua!
many thanx,

hello,
andwon reporting back. i tried all things suggested. nested sequence is scaled only in the master sequence. all sequences are dv pal as well as all clips(beta captured via firewire as dv); so no fields issue. maybe this thread should be re-named interlace probs, but i don’t know. there just seems to be a reduction in resolution, artifacts, and banding in the scaled nested sequences that still seems to be unexplainable. never had a prob scaling anything until 6. I’m looking at all of this from the timeline rendered on a Sony LCD monitor coming component out from a Kona 3 card. any thoughts appreciated.
Cheers,

i’m about to try and sort this all out now.
curious that everything seems to look good up until the last sequence. thanx for the tips.-andwon

i’ll give it a go and see if there’s improvement. i’m still not quite clear on the field order thing, if that’s a problem too.
how do you tell the field order has gone wrong other than it looks visually wrong. i know dv pal is lower field first and just about everything else is upper first. and i know you can change that setting in the sequence settings. where do you find the setting on an actual clip and what is the proper way to use the shift fields filter? Does it need to be applied in each sequence. can you apply it to a nested sequence or just a clip.
thanx for the help and your patience,

i’m looking at the rendered output yes.
the scaling is going to vary throughout the final sequence. that’s just the intial setting. i started this project in 5.0 and it wasn’t a problem. now that it’s in 6.0 it is? WTF?-andwon

well it’s kinda gone youtube lo rez. where in the work flow is the best place to apply the shift fields filter (1st or last seq) and the correct way to apply it? is it best to keep the sequences dv pal and just the master (last)sequence 8 bit?
many thanx,

I’m have quicktime 6 and in the process of tracking down another camera. I thought it might be the firewire out from the cam. i’ll see how it turns out. just wanted to make sure if it was something less obvious. i checked most of the firewire missing posts and have gone through the obvious troubleshooting measures.
