  • Hi Wayne,

I used to broadcast my own live concerts using a MacBook Pro, a Motu Ultralite and Rogue Amoeba’s “Nicecast” software to do exactly what you are speaking of.

So you’ll need a computer, audio interface, software and a streaming host (unless you have a very high upload bandwidth) for starters. Licensing etc. is a whole different matter.

    Mac software: https://www.rogueamoeba.com/nicecast/
    Win software: https://spacial.com/sam-broadcaster

Hope that helps to get you started!

    Good luck,

    André

    Hi Joe,

I know from my own experience that the drive in the Mac Pro can get quite dirty as the tray is pretty much open. I haven’t noticed any speed issues with mine yet but I would suggest blowing out some dust with a rocket blower or similar and maybe try one of those drive cleaning CD/s brush things. Drives can slow down dramatically when they have to re-read data a lot so maybe that’s what is causing the issue.

    Good luck!

  • Well considering that the H4n has severe distortion issues on the ext. Inputs I can only hope and would assume that the EX3’s pre’s are better than the H4n’s!

It’s not a fair comparison though and if you want good sounding audio you have to get good sounding pre-amps! Remember the H4n is not even meant to be a professional recorder. It’s a compromise, not a bad one but certainly nothing like a Sound Devices or even an Edirol or Tascam!

Don’t get me wrong I love my little Zoom H2 but in the end you get what you pay for and to compare a $300 semi-pro audio recorder to a $10’000 pro camera’s audio section … Just doesn’t work.

Now if you’re wondering how to get better sound out of what you have, I’d use the H4n as backup or b-recorder using the internal mic’s and connect the NTG-2 to a decent pre-amp such as the JuicedLink DT454 and record into the Canon or even better a dedicated recorder that doesn’t show distortion on its inputs like the H4n does (sadly!).

    Good luck!

    Hi Suley,

I’m not aware of any issues with the Røde Videomic Pro and that would have been my suggestion to you as well. I’m sure you can get a lot of extra info from the regular DSLR shooters forum here on creative cow as the “what mic to use” is a frequent topic there.

Alternatively you can go for a handheld recorder such as the Tascam DR-05 (personally I would not suggest the Zoom H4n, which seems very popular, to anyone that wants to use the mic input as it has issues with harmonic distortion) but recorders like the Tascam DR-05/07, Olympus LS-5, Korg SR1, Alesis Palmtrack etc. etc. Will do a good job for your purposes.

    Good luck!

    Hi Zan,

I’m an owner of the H2 myself and have not encountered that error before.

Can you look at the file within the H2 and report what the information entry gives you? (Go to Menu > File > SR000R > Information )

What I’d like to recommend for you to try is to play back the file on the H2 itself and if that is possible I would recommend that you simply play it out and record it again on another device / computer.

Also how are you getting the files of the SD card? With an external reader or are you connecting the H2 directly with the computer? You can also try to convert the file within the H2 to another format, maybe that’ll fix it.

Another trick that might work is to have the H2 encode the .wav into an mp3. If all of that doesn’t work I think it’s safe to assume that the file has got corrupted for some reason (most likely bad SD card).

Let us know what you find!

  • Hi Mitch,

Sadly no! The zoom speed on the rocker isn’t variable (something JVC really should address in a firmware update – if possible).

The only way to get slow zooms is to be very, very gentle on that rocker (one thing that I found helps is to use some scotch tape taped front to back over the rocker switch so it’s harder to move. That gives more resistance thus makes it easier to zoom slowly). And of course the other option is to use the lens ring set to zoom mode.

    Sorry!

  • Hi John, not much to say about the G-Tech drives, they just work. Connections (plugs) are solid and all around good quality. Don’t think you can go wrong with any of those especially with the 3 year warranty they give. The disks inside are Hitachi and I’ve not had a single Hitachi break on me yet. I’ve had several Western Digital external ones go bad on me (no internal ones though) and a couple Seagate (both internal and external) but always lucky with Hitachi.

  • Hi Jan,

Short answer: it is not and if you’re not using the newly released Motion and FCP there is actually no reason whatsoever to upgrade. Macprovideo has an article on this here: https://www.macprovideo.com/hub/final-cut/first-look-review-compressor-4-any-major-improvements

    Hi John,

Sounds very much like a corrupted clip due to a failure from the SD card. I’m wondering if you’ve tried playing back the clip in the camera and if that gives you an error?

Before making any big changes to the card I’d use duplication program to make an identical disk image of the card as you have it now and to work from that to find a solution. You can use apps like DiskUtility, Toast etc. to create an image from the SD card.

There are several tools to recover corrupted data from SD cards, SanDisk’s is one that I’ve used a few times on corrupted CF cards but so far (knock on wood) I haven’t had to recover any video from the HM100. If you have SanDisk memory cards you probably have a voucher somewhere to download and register it.

If not I’ve seen this application being recommended a lot, maybe that will help you out:
