July 1, 2011 at 5:25 pmI have a G5 (Leopard 10.58) with a HL-DT-ST DVD-RW GWA-4165B and a MacPro Intel (Snow Leopard 10.67) with a HL-DT-ST DVD-RW GH61N.
Copying a 4.5 gb dvd took about 7 minutes in the G5 and The MacPro is about half way through 13 minutes in.
Does this sound like a defective drive or could something else be going on?
Cheers,
Joe

July 3, 2011 at 2:28 pmHi Joe,
I know from my own experience that the drive in the Mac Pro can get quite dirty as the tray is pretty much open. I haven’t noticed any speed issues with mine yet but I would suggest blowing out some dust with a rocket blower or similar and maybe try one of those drive cleaning CD/s brush things. Drives can slow down dramatically when they have to re-read data a lot so maybe that’s what is causing the issue.
Good luck!

July 7, 2011 at 8:57 pmThanks for the response André. I got a dvd cleaner and the drive does sound much quieter. Hopefully it will be speedier too!
Cheers,
Joe
