Codec refers to the type of file compression you are using. The codec you render to is defined in the Output Module of the render queue item. The default output module is Lossless, which creates an Animation (100% Quality) Quicktime file on a Mac. This type of file is great for intermediate storage because you don’t lose any quality, but the file size is too big for reliable playback from a regular hard drive.

If you will be playing Quicktimes directly from a computer to the projector, I’d suggest changing the Quicktime codec to Photo JPEG or Sorenson 3 to reduce your file sizes. However, my overall recommendation would be to render lossless, then put your video files on DVD or tape for playback.

What codec are you rendering to? What is your playback medium for projection?

It’s easy to paste single or multiple expressions from one layer to multiple layers if you have AE 6.5.

Select the Parameter(s) that the source expression occurs on (such as Position) in the left column of the timeline window. Choose Edit/Copy Expression Only.

Select the target layers and choose Paste.

In AE 6.5, create a black solid, apply CC Star Burst. Set keyframes from 0 to the speed you want for the hyperspace bit. (Let’s not mix up our terminology here – there’s no warp speed in the Star Wars universe!)

Precompose the solid, moving all attributes to precomp. Apply Time/Echo to the precomp layer and adjust to taste (you’ll need to reduce the Echo Time and increase the number of echoes from the defaults). You should get nice streaks of light from the stars as they move.

If you have AE 6.5, then CC Rain is a good place to start.

May 12, 2005 at 9:08 am in reply to: DeInterlace in AE?

It’s important to recognise the distinction between Interpreting fields and deinterlacing. John’s post refers to interpreting, which means that AE will in effect deinterlace footage while still honouring the two fields. That means that if you are RENDERING fields as well, you won’t deinterlace your footage at all. The first field of your output will contain the first field info from your interpreted footage, the second output field will contain info from the second interpreted field.

To truly deinterlace the footage, options are:

1 – Interpret fields, render frames. (Not often an option).

2 – Deinterlace footage first in NLE

3 – Download the free plugins from Pete Warden, which includes a deinterlace filter.

4 – Check out Magic Bullet Suite, the best deinterlacing software ever (for a steep price!)

Make sure you have installed the 6.5.1 patch. There’s an acknowledged slow-down bug in 6.5 which is fixed with the patch.
