Have you tried converting them to ProRes using MPEG streamclip?

Bring your image into the canvas, select the whole group and move its anchor point to the bottom middle by using the adjust anchor point tool. It’s under the arrow tool, looks like a target.

Then use the bezier tool to draw your crooked cut shape mask. At the bottom of the image, try to pass your mask shape across where you moved the anchor point. The mask shape should start in the upper left corner, move to the top center, then down the middle in a crooked pattern, off to the left and back up to where you start the shape.

Apply an Image Mask to the picture layer and drag the bezier shape onto the mask layer.

Now duplicate the group and on the duplicate, select invert mask in the HUD. It has to be the group so the mask rotates in the next step

Now Animate and keyframe the Z rotation of 2 groups. You could also use the Spin Behavior if your prefer behaviors over keyframes.

Look at the top of your Canvas Window. See those 3 drop down menus – Size, Gang and View…

Make sure that RGB is checked and not Alpha.

I assume you’re using compressor on a self-contained QT file (or a reference movie) and not using the “Send To Compressor” Feature of FCP.

Maybe I should have put “Feature” in quote marks instead because I’ve never had the “Share” or “Send To…” commands work well.

if you want to export a good quality file just to keep as a “backup” of your edited master, then just export a Self-Contained QT file… Don’t export using QT Conversion.

If your sequence settings are ProRes422 and you export with conversion to Prores422 HQ, you’re not going to get the benefit of the larger export because your render files are written in the “lower quality” codec.

If you’re exporting for some type of specific distribution, then you should be choosing the best codec for whatever your distribution channel likes. Some (still) like MPEG-2… but more are leaning to H.264. Maybe they will want a blu-ray AVCHD…. depends on who’s going to be looking at it and how.

Most of my stuff ends up being h.264.

[Niko Kuehnel] “And then I have another question, which is much less important, but still there. I put together a 3 minute slideshow in FCP. It’s just jpegs with a bit of a zoom effect on them and music. When I try to export this, FCP tells me it needs about 2 hours. Is this normal? Is it because the program has trouble dealing with the still images I imported? Is there something I should do differently?”

How big are your jpegs? You can significantly save render time by downsizing them before-hand in PhotoShop to a pixel dimension that’s no more than you actually need.

February 23, 2011 at 4:31 pm in reply to: How to extend the beginning of a shot?

Well, here’s one way but I think the technique will look funny…

From where the head appears, go forward about 10 frames and click CTRL-V to add an edit.

Now set the timeline marker on the last fame before the add edit and hit match frame (f).

Set an outpoint in the source window on the match frame.

Now back up in the source window to the first good frame where the head appears and set an in point.

Now go to the edit side and set an in point on the first frame. Drag the source monitor to the edit monitor and select Fit To Fill.

But here’s a better option… cover the b-roll will some kind of graphic that summarizes what the person is about to say… or their name or anything other than the 2 seconds of b-roll. I think the lip-sync being off using the above technique will be far more offensive.. my 2 cents.

When you enable DOF, your camera icon should change to show the focus plane and the minimum and maximum area for what’s going to be in focus and where it starts to fall off.

You need you have your layers selected for them to show up in your viewer. Also, I think you need to have 3D icons turned on in your view menu….

That\’s some really good looking work. One comment: you used the running footage in the video wall twice for two different clients.

Do you have a different reel you show to potential clients that don\’t sell cars? 🙂

Really though, it\’s good work. I wish the budgets for our productions would allow for stuff like this.

…and in order to extrude a logo from ai with multiple paths, make your imported ai path a child of an extrude nurbs object and make sure ‘hierarchal’ is checked in the extrude nurbs property window.
