I’ve had this happen a few times when moving from desktop to laptop and back to desktop.. That’s what I get for taking work on vacation!

I’ve had the most luck if I take the good project and do a SELECT ALL and then export an XML of the whole project.

Then on the target computer do IMPORT / XML and make a new project and then do the relink.

    Hope that helps someone.

Thanks.. .that’s a possibility but I never use Send to Motion. I just dropped in a clip that was already in my capture scratch folder.

I’ve learned that FCP’s “Send to..(anything)” just doesn’t work all that well.

Your point is well worth remembering.

Oh yeah… Jason’s right. I read that and missed that you applied that style to it.

You could create a similar look by changing your line segment to airbrush and then opening the Stroke tab and adjusting the graph for WIDTH OVER STROKE to make it fatter in the middle. Then change your brush profile so it’s not so soft. Then under the style tab, animate your last point offset with keyframes or apply the write on behavior to make it draw on.

I’m sure you didn’t want to hear that… so back to your original question: would more ram help? a little but not appreciably so
    would be my guess.

I don’t know if there’s a quick way to replace all your lines with the more efficient way I described – that’s not something I have experience with.

Yup. All locked up. I was able to find a strange workaround.

The in-point I wanted for both audio and video was at 37:02 into the clip.

I changed the timing setting to zero which synched them back up. Then I dragged the clip in the timeline to the first frame of the project. Then I moved my playhead to 37:02 and hit I to trim the start of the clip. Then I dragged the new trimmed clip back to later in the timeline where it belonged. There you go.

I did have all sorts of behaviors and masking on the clip – wonder if they were causing the problems. I *might* have unlocked them at one-point and then re-locked them. I wonder if unlocking a clip from its audio does some damage to the timing attribute.

Anyway, problem solved but I think I’ll go back to my usual workflow which is exporting self-contained movies with the in and out points I want in the first place.

click reply and in the compos message window, the last icon is a disk. That will let you upload a file and provide a link to that file. You should zip it up… along with any bitmapped images used (like the cars?)

Don’t bother including fonts – I’ll just sub in something else.

I don’t see much in that project that would tax a machine like that. Which OS are you running? I can’t remember the exact version or max number but isn’t there some deal that a 32 bit OS can only access 2 gigs of RAM max per application?

If you were still under 10.6 (maybe 10.5?) more ram won’t do Motion any good. Even then, you have a decent amount for a project that looks like this. No lights, no motion blur, no 3D…

How are your graphics being made? All inside Motion? Are they huge bitmapped files? Are you using 3D space (cause it doesn’t look like you need it)?

Can you upload your project file?

nevermind… I just found the “other” quality settings pane in the 3D scene palette.

Maybe my discovery will help someone else with this same problem.

nevermind. I figured it out. Man, I wish I still had that old plug in. It did blinking cursors and everything including randomizing the amount of time between keystrikes.

Almost makes me want to fire up my old G3 to see if it’s still installed on there.

Thanks! I’m almost there. I’ve been using Motion for so long that I don’t know how to add a slider and animate the N value for expressions.

(My knowledge of expressions is VERY limited)

  • In addition to all that great advice, sometimes I’ll use magic bullet looks. The spot focus and tilt shift filters allow some faking of shallow dof.

I recently added an F3 to my package and the dof control is much more pronounced than I had expected. I’ve done talking head interviews where their eyes are in focus and his shoulder is a little soft.
