You’re actually checking the properties of the clip right? Control-Click on the clip both in the timeline and the bin and check its properties to make sure field dominance is set to the same thing as your sequence settings.
Is your clip set evenly on a pixel? If I reposition a clip, I always make sure the position values are set to even numbers. Sometimes dragging a clip to slightly reposition it will jag up the edges.
One final question… are you rendering inside Motion and importing a self-contained movie file or are you dropping the motion project file into the timeline?

Always work in the environment that your final render is going to live in.
If you work in SD and then crank up the frame size at the end, your scaling settings will be off.
Do what your heart tells you and dial back the render settings in the viewer window. Turn off shadows, reflections and depth of field. You can also set your resolution in the view window to half or third.

I’ve had several occasions where I’ll set the field dominance in motion as none and when I bring the clip into fcp, the field dominance changes to even. Control-click your clip in the timeline and make sure the properties there match the field dominance of the sequence.

Sorry. Motion flattens everything from Illustrator.”Correct me if I’m wrong but if you go to the media tab of your illustrator file (in Motion) and uncheck Fixed Resolution, doesn’t that keep it vector art?
I do this all the time when scaling up AI files and the edges stay crisp.

I don’t use it but know people who do and it seems pretty powerful – especially for free. Sounds like it would easily handle what you’re trying to do.

thanks for the tips… It got me started in the right direction.
I ended up using a plane (like you said around 10×2) and used a spline wrap on that which references a Helix spline for direction. Then it was just a matter of keyframing the offset of the spline wrap.
The spline wrap also allowed me to play with the size controls so I could taper the rectangle.

Just to add to what Gareth said….
I think the names were written using animated brush strokes with the write on effect and using a tablet makes this pretty easy. I’ve used the technique in that tutorial and it gets messy when a letter loops around itself or lines cross. Like with a capital A. If you don’t have the mask channel exactly right, then parts of the horizontal line will show up when you draw the first lines. Getting the mask channel right where it needs to be is the real time consuming part.
I also think the majority of the final image (that didn’t require animated writing) was made in PhotoShop and then the parts were filled in using motion.
