I would create the lower-third in Motion and then save it as a template with drop zones for the text fields.
Be sure to save your template in the right directory so it shows up in your drop down menu in the viewer in FCP.
Then edit the template into a FCP sequence. You can just edit your text right inside FCP for the lower-thirds.
You don’t need to render from Motion that way.
Otherwise, yes, you do need to render with an alpha channel. Either Animation with Millions+ colors or PR 4444.

First of all… make sure you’re using a codec that supports an alpha channel (either Animation or Prores 4444) Make sure you’re rendering in Millions+ Colors.

I don’t think that the look he’s trying to accomplish and I’ve been trying and I’m close but not quite.
I made lines of text and applied the type on behavior to it and also a sequence text behavior with the position parameter added. I made my Y position equal to the point size (in the negative direction) and set the spread to 0. Also set the unit size to Line.
This makes the whole line scroll up like what I think he’s looking for.
I was also playing around with using the paragraph layout method and setting the margins but that’s not quite right either.
I think the look he trying to accomplish is a line types on and when it gets to the end, the next line types on and the first line jumps up one line but in an area that’s only big enough for like 4 lines. Then when that area is filled up, the first line disappears from the top and the lines keep jumping up… like it’s being typed on a typewriter.

You can check to see what your alpha channel is up do while in Motion by either:
1: change your background color under EDIT>Project Properties to something other than black
2: goto VIEW>Channels and choose either alpha overlay or just alpha. You can hit v on the keyboard to toggle but unless your background is set to something other than black, the illusion will be just that all your color disappears.
It would be nice if Motion had an option to view transparent with a grid like PhotoShop but I don’t think it does…

Dslr cameras aren’t designed to be workhorse video production cameras. They take great images and I use a t2i as a second camera. My primary camera is a Sony EX-1. If I were shopping today with a 5k budget, I would be seriously considering the Panasonic AF100.

okay, so the way to fix it is to CONTROL-CLICK on the clip in the timeline, get properties–>Format and where it says Upper – then control click on that property and select NONE.
I’ve had this problem for a long time. I set field dominance to none in Motion and import into FCP, edit it into the timeline and *Most* of the time, the FD switches in upper and I have to change it manually.
One more thing to add from my experience, if your timeline has been rendered already, sometimes switching the FD won’t “unrender” that segment of the timeline and you won’t see any change. Drop a SLUG clip (or any clip) onto the timeline above your motion clip, then delete the SLUG. Now FCP will see the chance you made for the re-render.

Sounds like you’re covering your bases pretty well. One small inconsistency though…
You said you checked the frame dominance of both clips and they were set to even, yet you said in the previous post that you use 1080 30p. Which is progressive which would mean that your field dominance should be set to none. And the setting you confirmed in that last post as 1080 30p isn’t the setting I’m talking about, it’s the compressor – not the field dominance.
Just to be sure, I’m uploading screen grabs of the setting I’m talking about. One is from SEQUENCE/SETTINGS, one is the field dominance column in the bin and the last is from CTRL-CLICKING a clip the timeline and selecting ITEM PROPERTIES / FORMAT

And finally… did you try a different font? Could be a bogus font – not that I want to add more things to try! Jaggy text has been a huge issue for me in the past – but more with LiveType which never seemed to be able to import with the right field dominance so I’ve learned to get pretty observant about all the settings.
