  • That’s not quite what I meant. Have Premiere users found it best to just copy over the whole BPAV folder to your media drive? If you do that, is there a good way to preview a clip before you import? And once your project is done and the media is deleted, what is your workflow for bringing it back on-line if you need it again.

My current workflow in FCP works very well. I backup the camera’s card to an optical disc. I use Log and Transfer to preview and import only the clips I need – not importing bad takes. I can even specify to only import audio if I have voice tracks and don’t need the video. Once my edit is done, I can delete the media. If I need to re-link the media files – I just select the sequence, choose batch capture and FCP tells me to insert my backup disc and it only re-imports the clips needed for the selected sequence.

So here’s the abbreviated version of my question:

Does Premiere have a way to:

    1. Preview clips before importing into a project?

    2. Select In and Out points before importing the entire clip? Or only import audio from a clip?

    3. Batch re-import only the media necessary for a specific sequence?

I can’t take all the credit. I’m just like you. Watch this.

Audio tracks in premiere are stereo or mono. And you can only edit like tracks to like tracks. Your A1 track is stereo and your source is 2 channel mono.

To get fcp like behavior, check your new sequence properties audio tab and change it to 0 stereo tracks and 4 mono tracks. Then go to preferences/audio and set the import clips preference to mono.

  • Thanks. I figured out the best way to do it was to take a layer that was already in that neighborhood in 3d space, highlight POSITION, and ROTATION, then copy and paste those properties onto the layer that just moved beck to zero.

If I could plug my EX-1 into an iPad, rough edit on the road and then open that project back in my studio on my desktop in FCP 7… now I’m listening.

Or maybe by then FCP-X will have matured enough to the point where 7 is now (more or less)

I so badly want Premiere or AVID to support my Audio Mixer Control Surface. My (now discontinued) Tascam FW-1082 is my favorite FCP 7 accessory.

…because nothing looks more professional than an edit suite you can fit into your briefcase and buy at Wal*Mart.

Yikes! Just because you can doesn’t mean you should.

Looking back I probably shouldn’t have referred to all of us as self-proclaimed “pros” and put it into quotation marks. It was late. My intention was to illustrate that we’re all professionals – but we all have a different definition of what that means.

Whether you use FCP for weddings, broadcast spots, training web videos or academy award winning films, we’re all in the same boat. We’re disappointed by facets FCP-X 1.0 in one way or another and we have a decision to make. The best option for all users depends what what kind of pro you are.
