Sorry, this has kind of been lingering. It came to my mind again today when I encountered this issue again.
Six different 30 second commercials, all 1080p, 29.97, ProResHQ. Without rhyme or reason, 3 of the 6 defaulted to various odd framerates. I had thought at time it was when using the MC H.264 encoder on content with audio and encoding with B-frames, but it seems that it’s not so predictable.
The latest I’ve from Sorenson is a major update coming out in June or July.

Sorry, it took me awhile to respond. I found the solution I needed and was engulfed in making it happen.
Basically I created a custom page template for each category on the portfolio site. I also created corresponding category tags for the posts. When a post is made it is assigned a category. Then there is some PHP code I found that queries all posts (in my scenario posts with a custom field of “thumbnail”) an displays only the ones with the requested category ID#. This bit of PHP is unique to each page template. So the Motion Design page has a string of code that calls up all posts tagged in the motion design category and displays the thumbnails from those posts found in the custom field.

What are you compression settings on the file?
Check the meta data of the file with MediaInfo. This will show you the framerate and all the other useful info when troubleshooting a problem with your compressed file.

If you have any input I’d appreciate it. I’m still working out the best delivery system for the 3D content we are creating. I’ve been chatting a lot on some 3D specific forums. (mtbs3d.com)
You were definitely right about the inability to do 3D BR. We are looking for an efficient 3D solution for a large client of ours. This solution will likely be implemented in stores nationwide.
I’ve researched all options for delivery of this content, polarized and passive, HDTV and computer-based. Polarized would be nice, but current solutions use small monitors. Any TV-based polarized solution has just been released or will be released in a few months (too late). 3D Blu-ray systems are completed packages as far as a turnkey system goes, but I can’t really make content for them.
The guys on the 3D forum I’ve been visiting know hardware, but the don’t know about the needed video specs. They did have a suggestion that I liked though. Do you think it’d be possible to encode a standard 2D BR disc in a side-by-side or over-and-under stereoscopic format and manually set a 3D TV to read it as a 3D disc? I’m working with local stores on testing this, since if we find a solution would purchase instantly and the client would purchase several setups as well.
Any thoughts or ideas are appreciated. At this point I’m open to any suggestion on the best way to deliver 3D content to a meeting of 20+ people and eventually in stores.

I appreciate the logic Larry.
I agree that this difference shouldn’t be noticeable, but there is something about the way that Sorenson is removing frames that adds a slight jitter to the video.
I know it’s not just me because I was showing a compression to one of our motion design guys to show him the amount of color I was able to retain with one H.264 encoder over another. He has no idea that there was a framerate issue, and that was the first thing that he noticed. It’s subtle, but, as I said, it seems to be more than just less frames, it’s the way those frames are removed.
That is an interesting note on the fps difference. Sounds like it has to be the issue.

I had this same issue today and tried all the obvious troubleshooting steps.
Turns out I was getting it because of one of my deck presets was misconfigured. I have one labeled “AJA Kona: 29.97 Sony VTR A” and one labeled “AJA Kona: 29.97 Sony VTR B”. Generally they are both set to the same settings. They are both even labeled 29.97. In “A/V Settings” I looked at the “Device Control Presets”, not the “Summary” page. Turns out that the preset got the fps switched to 59.94.
On a slightly related note, I see a “Playback Offset” option. When would that come into play?

I know, I’m so disappointed I didn’t make NAB this year. I’ve been mentioning how someone from our company needed to be there for awhile, especially to help figure out 3D…but anyways. Next year.
We’re creating the source. It’s a 3D model of a shoe created in C4D and Maya and composited in AE. So all source is literally 3D. The end product will be displayed in stores, and the company will invest in whatever 3D tech we advise them to use. In addition to this they need a “mobile” version of of the project for use in small presentations.
