Good of you to write. I tried sticking to the basic settings as you kindly suggested, PAL in my case, and it has improved for computer and youtube viewing. But the burning to a disk with the same ‘better’ quality alludes me. My copy of Vegas Pro 8 came with the camera as a promo copy, the DVD architect part was trial only and the trial time has passed, so basically I do not have DVD Architect. I tried burning a DVD from the Tools menu in Vegas. The only format offered was Main Concept MPEG 1. I tried 2 test renderings and each time got this message,

-‘MATSHITA DVD-RAM UJ-850 z RB32’-(0)
Module c:\p4\sonic3\release\vegas\8.0\cddrvs\sfcd\mmc.cpp Line 2017
The operation is not supported by this drive.

So, nothing there. My needs are not complicated. I make short films documenting the life in our village and would simply like to group a few together to burn onto a DVD with the same quality.

I can collect the films rendered for youtube and burn to DVD but the quality is not so good. Is DVD Architect really the only way forward?

Thanks for that, it was as I suspected. I have been doing numerous test renderings with both PAL and NTSC, and making various other adjustments, lots of trial and error really since I don’t understand very well how most of the settings work.

What does confuse me somewhat is that my previous camera was also digital but using tapes, my current is HDD, yet with the tape camera panning was always smooth. I will continue to experiment. Thanks very much for answering.

P.S. I don’t suppose you know why all my HDD video footage, when transferred to my external memory, shows just an icon and not a thumbnail, unlike tape footage. It makes locating a particular piece of film very difficult unless I re-title each piece.

Dear Matt,

I don’t think the visual problem I have is what you referred to as the ‘comb effect’ When I pan even slowish or if someone moves near the camera the image, or pan, is very jolty or stuttery. It is not smooth as I would expect, as it should be. I have tried numerous combinations of settings, this is just a very brief summery of a few.
For youtube
1)NTSC DV -Blend field properties not HD
2)HD settings for youtube – interpolated
3)combination of 1) property settings and 2)rendered for HD

I then checked the match media icon and saw that the footage was actually in PAL so I have done several renderings in PAL. All in all, however, there is not a great difference between NTSC or PAL. The ‘higher’ the rendering setting, thought, the more this stuttering is apparent. When viewed on the TV it is really quite dreadful.
I am really at a loss to know how to improve the quality. I am going to try filming with the camera set at HDFH instead of HDFX, but maybe I am just clutching at straws.

If you have any other possible leads I’d be extremely grateful.

Hi Matt,
I really appreciate your advice. I am still experimenting and will come back with something more conclusive but for now it seems that the ‘none’ option for deinterlace settings does not produce a smooth visual for TV viewing. My youtube settings are ok, though there are a few occasions where I still get this juddering effect when panning. I will report back again soon when I have experimented further. If in the meantime you have any other suggestions I would be very grateful to hear. For now I am so happy to have a lead from you.

I did as you suggested and uploaded an update to Vegas pro 8 and it seems to have worked. It seems so simple and had I known it it would have saved me half a day. As it is, better that then all my nerves. Thank you so much once again.
