staggering images!
Is there any way I can eliminate the staggering look of rendered footage. I record with a Sony HD AVCHD camera, project properties are HDV 720-30, best, and rendered for HD on youtube yet when there is any motion close to the camera or if the camera pans a little fast I get this awful staggering, jerky picture. I am not using the image stabilizer. This problem does not occur if I just watch footage directly through the TV. Is there some recommended rendering setting (if that is indeed the problem) that I could try that someone knows would eliminate this. I never had this with my old tape camera!
Please advise. Much appreciated in advance.

Check the deinterlace settings for your project (in project properties). You need to specify either Blend or Interpolate (experiment to find which works best) to get video suitable for PC or Youtube viewing. For DVD/TV output you can specify None, but the video may look bad (your staggering/combing effect) when viewed on a PC. Make sure you use the same deinterlace setting when rendering.

I really appreciate your advice. I am still experimenting and will come back with something more conclusive but for now it seems that the ‘none’ option for deinterlace settings does not produce a smooth visual for TV viewing. My youtube settings are ok, though there are a few occasions where I still get this juddering effect when panning. I will report back again soon when I have experimented further. If in the meantime you have any other suggestions I would be very grateful to hear. For now I am so happy to have a lead from you.

I’m far from being an expert on these matters! The general advice seems to be to leave deinterlacing as Blend (or Interpolate which may give a better appearance with lots of movement/panning) for all projects. Deinterlacing will be applied if required for the output format.
By “staggering”, do you mean the comb effect you see in the picture in this post? (click the image to see full size) https://forums.creativecow.net/thread/24/918880 That’s what interlacing looks like on a device that doesn’t properly deinterlace.
If you’re editing AVCHD, try setting your project properties to match the source video (click the Match Media icon at top right of the Project Properties dialog and pick one of your clips), edit with that, then select whichever render template you want for output when you render.
Also do a forum search on interlacing – there are loads of threads related to this.

I don’t think the visual problem I have is what you referred to as the ‘comb effect’ When I pan even slowish or if someone moves near the camera the image, or pan, is very jolty or stuttery. It is not smooth as I would expect, as it should be. I have tried numerous combinations of settings, this is just a very brief summery of a few.
For youtube
1)NTSC DV -Blend field properties not HD
2)HD settings for youtube – interpolated
3)combination of 1) property settings and 2)rendered for HDI then checked the match media icon and saw that the footage was actually in PAL so I have done several renderings in PAL. All in all, however, there is not a great difference between NTSC or PAL. The ‘higher’ the rendering setting, thought, the more this stuttering is apparent. When viewed on the TV it is really quite dreadful.
I am really at a loss to know how to improve the quality. I am going to try filming with the camera set at HDFH instead of HDFX, but maybe I am just clutching at straws.If you have any other possible leads I’d be extremely grateful.
