Desperate for help!
In a nutshell: In rendered footage the pan is not smooth but composed of tiny jerky movements. It makes viewing a bit painful on youtube and very painful on a DVD on TV. I record with a Sony HD AVCHD camera and edit on Sony Vegas Pro8. I do not get this problem when viewing footage directly through the TV from the camera.I have tried numerous rendering settings between NTSC and PAL, original footage is in PAL. Attached is an example, it will be immediately apparent especially at around 20 seconds

I will try any combination anyone suggests.
Also can anyone explain the following
1) the difference between Blend and Interpolate fields?
2) the difference between 8-bit and 32-bit, floating point? How does each effect the image?
3) Target bit rate, which is best setting, 64k or 6.67M – Internet/LAN?
4) the difference between gaussian and gaussian(asymetrical), which should one choose?
5) Which Field order is best, upper, lower, none?
6) Best pixel aspect ratio?Sorry to ask so much. I have tried to be as succinct as possible, but hope not obscure, I simply get very confused not knowing how each setting interacts with the others to find the best one. I really like this SONY program and would be very reluctant to give it up.
I will happily provide some of the rendering settings I have used if anyone asks.

The general rule-of-thumb is to not touch any parameter if you don’t know what it does. Vegas works perfect right out-of-the-box! Nothing to tweak, no magic incantations. Here’s how it works:
(1) Set your project to match your source footage. If your AVCHD camera shoots 1920×1080-60i then use the HD 1080-60i (1920×1080, 29.970 fps) project template. Do not make any changes to the project properties.
(2) To render for DVD, use MainConcept MPEG2 to render your video with the DVD Architect NTSC Widescreen video stream temple. Render your audio using the Dolby Digital AC3 with the appropriate template (stereo or 5.1).
(3) Render to Youtube using Sony AVC with the Internet 16:9 HD 30p template.
If you are in a PAL country, use the PAL equivalent of the templates I mentioned. Your deinterlace method should be at the default, Blend Fields. You should use 8-bit and not 32-bit unless you have very specific needs to use 32-bit. You should just not change anything from the defaults unless you have a good reason. The Sony programmers are pretty smart and they set the program to work very well without needing any tweaks.

Good of you to write. I tried sticking to the basic settings as you kindly suggested, PAL in my case, and it has improved for computer and youtube viewing. But the burning to a disk with the same ‘better’ quality alludes me. My copy of Vegas Pro 8 came with the camera as a promo copy, the DVD architect part was trial only and the trial time has passed, so basically I do not have DVD Architect. I tried burning a DVD from the Tools menu in Vegas. The only format offered was Main Concept MPEG 1. I tried 2 test renderings and each time got this message,-‘MATSHITA DVD-RAM UJ-850 z RB32’-(0)

The operation is not supported by this drive.So, nothing there. My needs are not complicated. I make short films documenting the life in our village and would simply like to group a few together to burn onto a DVD with the same quality.
I can collect the films rendered for youtube and burn to DVD but the quality is not so good. Is DVD Architect really the only way forward?

MPEG1 is a low quality codec and you really need MPEG2. What I would do is upgrade your Vegas Pro 8.0 to Vegas Pro 10.0 and you’ll get DVD Architect Pro 5.2 with it. It’s unfortuate that you just missed the $139 ugrade price. The upgrade is now $239 but if you want to create DVD’s you need a DVD authoring program. If you don’t have the money, your other option would be to buy Vegas Movie Studio HD Platinum which comes with DVD Architect Studio. This is not as good as the Pro version but it will burn DVD’s.
