[Michael Gissing] ” So the idea is that editors, graders and sound post can all work within the one tool and collaboratively. “
The old Final Cut suite and the current Adobe suite have a similar philosophy, yet a less elegant solution (sending to other apps in the suite vs doing everything inside one app). The sticking point, of course, is that you have to have offline editors, online editors, gfx/vfx, and audio all wanting and willing to work in the same program.

[Bill Davis] “Part of that IMO is the result of recent elections where a “lets go back to when it was easier” mentality showed up lots of polling places worldwide.
“I don’t follow how recent elections have impact adoption rates over the previous six years.
[Bill Davis] “And when the dams eventually break – the hardware, software, and even the “what IS an NLE anymore” thinking environment may be VERY different than what we see today. Only time will tell. “
Which dams are you still waiting to break? To me, dams all over busted wide open starting with the DV Revolution in the late ’90s/early ’00s. Follow through to today where most people in first world countries can shoot, edit and distribute videos without any extra out of pocket costs merely by using hardware and services that they already use in their day to day lives (smart phones, computers, Internet connections, etc.,). Speaking in generalities, I don’t really see what barriers to entry are left standing. Now whether or not their videos will get views and/or generate meaningful revenue is a complete different question.

Multi-editor workflows on par with Avid. Of course that’s on my wish list for any NLE not made by Avid. 😉

[Tim Wilson] “Nope, it’s all about the display. The headline is “Holographic Media Machine. No Glasses Needed.””
Maybe I’m missing something, but AR has been glasses free for a long time and the Nintendo 3DS and Amazon’s Fire Phone did glasses-free 3D years ago.
With regards to VR, immersive and interactive are the selling points of VR and you can’t do that unless something his holding the screen in front of your eyes and blocking out your peripheral vision. And if you want to do any short of interactive VR then you need a controller too (or an array of motion sensors/cameras)
And since “no one wants to drag around another piece of gear that has to be charged every day” then Hydrogen has to be a good enough smart phone to get people to ditch their Samsungs and iPhones.
I think there are so few cameras specs because they are still trying to figure out what the camera specs will be. If the modules are like the big camera add-ons other companies offer for smart phones then you basically kill the ‘all in one, fits in your pocket’ selling point. If you have to have a bag to hold extra gear for your smart phone’s camera then why not just put a better camera in there since you have to have the bag with you anyone? An iPhone plus a DSLR and accessories instead of an iPhone plus a Hydrogen and accessories.
I don’t think there is much of a mass-market for a very expensive media consumption device (I’m having Redray flashbacks ???? ). The iPad was originally pitched as a consumption-centric device but after flat sales Apple started to push the productivity aspect of it more and more (and of course they released the iPad Pro).
Obviously color me skeptical. 😉

$1200 for the low end model and current prices are temporary, introductory prices. Yikes.
Stupid question, why not just make a pocket camera instead of a pocket camera cell phone? And I wonder how modular it’s going to be. Like just the camera part is modular? Or is the whole thing modular like Google’s Project Ara? The glasses-free angle seems kinda half true since you’ll still need a contraption to keep it on your face for VR. Amazon released a glasses-free 3D phone a couple of years ago and no one seemed interested in it.
It seems like this will have to be a field camera first, a great display second and a phone third.

[Steve Connor] “I think he wants us to shift away from Paradigm :)”
So not saying paradigm is the new paradigm?

[Scott Witthaus] “Look, I was just offering a possible marketing strategy for competitors to “Adobe Can’t be Stopped”. Avid particularly. Take that as you may.
“I think Avid’s been doing that for a long time (i.e. their marketing focus on all the big, award winning movies and TV shows that have been cut on Avid), but then MC gets dismissed for being an elitist tool only used by a relatively small subset of editors working in ivory towers located in a niche market that is no longer relevant to the video production industry at large. How many people react to Avid’s marketing by saying, “Well, I don’t work on big movies or big TV shows so obviously MC isn’t relevant to me and/or the work that I’m doing”? That’s not a way to grow your base.
Over the last 15-20yrs Avid’s problem has always been trying to grow outside of TV and film areas they already dominate. I think MC First is the fifth ‘spin-off’ version of MC that Avid has made since 2000 in hopes of gaining some traction down market. Maybe it’ll work this time…?

[Walter Soyka] “Finally, I’d agree that documentation has suffered and support does sound abysmal. I haven’t actually tried it. Is there even one person here who has had a very positive Adobe support experience that didn’t require intercession from Kevin or a member of the development team?”
The documentation is horrible. But it seems documentation has gone down hill across the board over the last few years. Or maybe I just got spoiled by the great documentation that came with FCP Legend. The only time I’ve gotten decent tech support from a vender is when I’ve been under a maintenance contract with them. ‘Free’ tech support always seems to be disappointing, but I guess you get what you pay for. I think I called Apple tech support one time for a question with FCP 5.1 and the support was so useless I’ve never bothered to call them about anything since.

[Oliver Peters] “With Avid, I generally download the full app from the download center and just install it on top, skipping the App Mgr updater entirely.”
My game plan as well. One time I forgot to deactivate the old one before installing the new one and that meant I had to call Avid and have them deactivate the license on their end. Hopefully there’s an easier way to do it these days.
With that being said, Adobe really needs to change the default setting in the update so that ‘remove previous versions’ is UNchecked.

[Brian Seegmiller] “However Apple did announce 2 million seats for FCP X. They seem to be a little more public recently.”
Adobe, Apple, etc., have announced numbers in the past too, but the numbers are typically a once in a blue moon announcement from the PR department as opposed to a quarterly announcement from the financial department.
