How long is the project you are sending over, what codec is it in, and do you have an nested sequences in it?

What’s funny Grinner is as mainly a FCP editor I look back over the last two years and, aside from the initial release of FC Studio 2, I wonder what the heck is going on. Adobe is moving forward w/CS3 and CS4, Avid looks like they are getting back on track w/MC 3.0, but Apple really hasn’t done anything to the FCS for over two years. Can we get some Blu-ray authoring? How about fixing many of the numerous problems w/Color? From what I’ve read I really like how well Avid’s ScriptSync seems to be working and being able to add a realtime TC burn would save us hours on making deliverables for our weekly TV show.
I hope Apple has a big announcement in the coming months otherwise this plateau is going to turn into a backslide, IMO. I guess the grass is always greener… 🙂 All this competition is nice though. Hopefully Adobe, Apple, and Avid will continue to push each other so that we get better and better tools to work with.

What about using ProRes? I agree w/David that working at ‘online’ resolution the whole time would be preferable to using an offline/online workflow if at all possible.

While $3k will buy you the the JL Cooper Spectrum, which is what I think you are referring to, it is useless w/o dropping another $2k on the JL Cooper MCS-3000 which is the ‘brain’ that the Spectrum needs to be coupled with. Even though a Wacom isn’t as good as a dedicated control surface it is much better than a mouse.

Avid Unity and FC server aren’t really comparable products. Unity and Apple xSan are both share storage solutions but FC server is a media management tool. You might get better answers to your Q’s by posting them in Avid, xSan, or FC server areas of the COW.

Are you running FCP 5.0 or 5.1? If you are running 5.0 your performance will always suffer because 5.0 and below is all PPC based software which has to be run in emulation so it works w/your Intel based Mac.

Yes, this a pitfall to capturing HDV as ProRes via FW. Those ProRes files are essentially your new masters because it is limited to “capture now” and no source TC is recorded. Also, in my experience HDV has been problematic when trying to get frame accurate recaptures even when editing natively.

Between school and the work shop my vote is for practical experience. 😉
The typical career path for an editor is starting out as a PA/runner/grunt, then moving up to an Assistant Editor, then moving up to Editor. The more experience you have in a real, professional working environment the better your chances of moving up the ladder.
