If someone says “control click” it means control+left click. Which is the same function as just right clicking. If you are using a Mighty Mouse (the default Apple mouse) you have to go into the system preferences and enable the ‘right click’ function in order to get both left and right clicking functionality. Or you could just buy a better mouse. 😉

Yes, in NTSC land digital video black level is 0 and analog video black level is 7.5. This conversion should happen at the I/O card though. So inside FCP you should be working w/0 and then on output you tell the I/O card to step it up to 7.5.

My long story short, no. I was more interested in writing (the only video related thing I’d done was a short monster movie in elementary school). My first year of college I couldn’t decide what to major in (I was looking for something to get me a ‘day job’ until I could make a living writing) so I went to a professional career specialist and he basically said I was most like people that worked on movies/tv shows. So armed w/that knowledge I transfered to the university w/the best video production program in the state and jumped head first into production and post. I fell in love w/shooting and editing and that’s how I got on the path that I’m still on today.

I’d contact them and ask for specifics (codec, frame rate, file size, etc.,). If they don’t care about codec or file size I’d send them an uncompressed file. The less compression you have to use the better and h.264 is a very compressed codec.

The final product is destined for an interlaced medium (TV) so deinterlacing it will just be unneeded destruction because it will get reinterlaced down the line. Paul just needed to view his interlaced material on a monitor that properly displayed interlaced footage.-A

If it’s going for b’cast you have to judge the image on a monitor that will properly display interlaced video (such as a broadcast CRT monitor). You can’t properly judge the image by viewing it on your computer monitor.
Does the network/channel you are delivering to really specify h.264 as the codec it wants?

Are you working w/interlaced footage, is your Canvas window set to 100%, and are you viewing this on a broadcast monitor?

While I am a firm believer in making your own luck and knocking on opportunity’s door instead of waiting for opportunity to come knocking on mine, some things are just dumb luck. For example, a few years ago a colleague of mine (“Bob”) was at a video game store chatting w/the clerk and Bob mentioned that he was a video editor for a site that reviewed video games. The guy behind Bob in line then introduced himself because he was working for a large internet company that was interested into branching out into creating video content catering to gamers. Bob and the guy hit it off and a few months down the road Bob started working for him.

W/o knowing your specific system setup and workflow it’s kinda hard to tell you want could be improved. 😉
My first reaction is that something is definitely not right. For the past couple of years I’ve been one of dozen or so editors working daily on an xSan with, give or take, 900hrs of footage coming and going and I can only thing of handful of instances where FCP has ‘lost’ a clip for no apparent reason. MM isn’t one of FCP’s strong suits, but what you are describing I haven’t run into before.
And, just out of curiosity, have the other editors you talked w/also been Avid editors that aren’t very familiar w/FCP?

Your final format makes a difference because there’s not point in deinterlacing interlaced source material if it is just going to get reinterlaced for final delivery. Since it’s for the internet I’d convert all the interlaced material to progressive since computer displays are progressive and progressive material compresses better than interlaced.
Also, the ‘flimic’ aspects of 24fps and progressive images comes from the motion characteristics you get from shooting in that format. Taking 60i footage and converting it to 24p in post isn’t going to give you the same look.
