I wouldn’t be so sure about that. Pretty much any first gen intel Mac (even the Mini’s) can hang, and even beat, a G5 tower when it comes to CPU heavy tasks. The last G5, the quad-core, is the lone exception to this. Add in the fact that FCP doesn’t use the GPU hardly at all and more and more things are coming out as intel only and your current laptop is looking at lot more appealing than a G5, IMO.3.2GHz 8-core, FCP 6.0.4, 10.5.5

Try going back to the original source media and transcoding it again. Whenever I run into problems like this it’s almost always related to ‘bad media.’ If that doesn’t work take the ProRes file you have and transcode it same as source.

My window looks the same as yours Wayne.
My assumption is that the Audio Preview button missing is a side effect of the HDV compression. Kinda like how you can’t send an HDV signal out from FCP to an HDV deck for recording or monitoring the same way you can a DV or DVCPro HD signal.

AFAIK the HDV capture window has always looked different. I do not have FCP 7 yet so I can’t see if FCP has a “unified” L&C window or not but where I’m at now we have nearly two dozen machines and for the thousands of hours of HDV we’ve captured over the years the L&C window has always looked different than if we were capturing DV or DVCPro HD (all over FW of course).

You are going from 2157×1314 down to 960×720 so there is bound to be quality loss. What happens if you use PS to reduce the resolution? It might do a better job of scaling down than FCP does.

E-mails from Steve Job’s account seem to have become more frequent over the last 12-18 months. The first one I really remember is from ’08 when the Macbook update removed all the firewire ports and Steve Job’s allegedly responded to a complaint via e-mail where he basically said that for the past few years no new cameras released used FW.

If Apple can streamline the UI to enable editors to be more productive w/o sacrificing power or flexibility more power to them. What I don’t want is a ‘dumbed-down’ interface or program.

I’ve only seen two kinds of responses from Jobs in the media. Blunt or silence. “But Jobs doesn’t make promises. Apple doesn’t share its roadmap. If anything Steve Jobs helming Apple has a history of silence, like you said, and misdirection (ex. Jobs saying things like they aren’t interested in getting into the already crowded mobile phone market or that they don’t see why anyone would want to watch video on the iPod’s tiny screen).
Rumors can be a fun distraction sometimes but I’ll save my judgments for when the rubber meets the road.
