If you are capturing directly via FW I think your source (in this case the camera) and FCP must have matching settings. I don’t think you can set the camera to HD, FCP to DV and have it work. Is there an option in the camera to downconvert the signal to DV when it is going out over FW?

A possible alternative to the Viewer could be a ‘quick view’ function straight in the Browser window. For example, you highlight a piece of media in the Browser, hit the space bar and it pops up and starts playing (much like the preview feature in OS X). The window could also contain the same types of buttons and info fields that the Viewer window currently has. I guess this would basically be a Viewer window that only appears when you actually need to use it.
I don’t know how many times I’ve tapped the space bar to try and view a clip in the Browser because I’m so used to previewing media in the OS that way.

Maybe I’m envisioning it the wrong way but I’m not all too keen on having one giant app. I mean, do I really want the equivalent of Motion, DVD SP, Compressor, Cinema Tools, Color, Sound Track Pro, and FCP all open and running at the same time? Especially when i typically have a number of other apps open as well?
I would like better round tripping and a more unified feel between the apps but I don’t know if mixing everything into a ‘super-app’ is the best way to go about it. Audio apps look like audio apps for a reason and compositing apps look like compositing apps for a reason. W/that being said if anyone can gracefully bring it all under one roof it’s Apple. I’m just afraid that the compromise in doing so will be an ‘simpler’ app that while more streamlined will be so at the cost of deeper level functionality.
I’m cool with elegant and efficient I just don’t want dumbed-down when it comes to my professional tools.

Duplicate clip detection is turned on and each unique color represents footage that has been used more than once in that timeline. It can be a useful feature but only if the footage has all be properly labeled and logged.
I think you can turn it off in either your user or sequence settings.

RAID 1 is okay for redundancy but it is not good as a back up. If a file goes corrupt or accidentally gets deleted/overwritten RAID 1 won’t help you. If a power surge fries your gear RAID 1 won’t help you. Back ups need to be kept separate from the ‘active’ storage (and ideally in a different geographical location).

Gotta side with Kevin on this one. Recent changes in copyright law are finally starting to counteract the legal precedent skirting piece of crap known as the DMCA. In 2009 the U.S. Copyright Office made it legal to bypass the copy protection on things like DVD’s if it is for academic or analysis and criticism purposes. Although it sucks that lobbyists pushed through a law, the DMCA, that robbed people of their rights it’s nice to see us getting them returned (albeit slowly).

In the Motion Tab adjust the Anchor Point and that will change the axis the image rotates on.

Like others have said, it really depends on your needs and what you are looking for. Young bucks, even hot shot young bucks, are going to need a lot of hand holding. This is doubly true if you do broadcast work because that is a massive black hole in knowledge that schools don’t teach and you can’t pick up on your own. If you are going straight to the web it’s not as big a deal if the editor doesn’t know what ‘broadcast legal’ means or what video fields are.

What I said will do just that (only copy the sections of the clip used in the timeline). You just have to make sure the clip has a Reel number assigned to it in the Browser and that “delete unused media” is checked in the Media Manager window.
