Try this:

Make a backup first.

Open without the offending event.
Probably your project is still there.
Export the project as XML.
Import the XML into FCPX — this will create a new event and you can reconnect the files. Bad thing is that all metadata you might have assigned to media are gone, same with many custom settings for templates and effects in the project. But you should have at least your “basic” project back to start over.

Finally there are no rules.

You have to decide and test yourself where the titles should appear in z-space.
This decision also depends on projection/screening (and dimensions of the movie)
Subtitles always disturb the picture, with 3D subtitles it’s even worse.

Reading the OP’s question I understood that they want to work on an event metadata and share.
This is not really possible!
If two people are working on the same clip on different machines they may have different decisions on how to tag metadata.
Transporting the event gives either the metadata of user 1 or user 2. There is no control like “create metadata”, “add metadata”, “replace metadata”, “replace or add metadata” etc.
So it is always a one way transport – never work on the same event on two locations.
XML had been a method before X, but now it’s useless as it does not transport metadata anymore.

Just something you should be aware of.

Jeff’s suggestion is the only way to work with drives on a server which are not part of a SAN or locally connected.

There are 2 options (using DiskUtitlity):
1) Create a read/write dmg which will fit your project size — with enough space left for some changes.
2) Create a sparseimage with a size which will allow to do a lot of changes.

Both of them behave like a disk. If the disk is full — no way to add files or make changes!
The sparseimage though is a bit bit different from the dmg, it can grow or shrink. This can save some disk space on the network drive for finished projects.
But again: there must be enough free space on the network drive!

Here a simple example for a dmg/sparseimage:
In DiskUtility create a new “Blank Disk Image”.
Set a name both for the saved image file and the name of the disk. The entry for the “Save As” holds the name of the created file in Finder, the “Name” is the name of the disk displayed in Finder and FCPX when it’s mounted.
Now enter the size with the custom settings — for example 5G for a mini project.
Select the type: “read/write disk image” or “sparse disk image”
Save.
The dmg will cover 5G of disk space. The sparseimage about 500 MB — as long as it’s an empty sparseimage.
Both options will take a while to create the images depending on their size.
Once done they will automatically show up in FCPX and you can duplicate/save a project to those disk images.
In both cases you should use the copy the original files and not only the references.

You even can create new events or projects on this ‘virtual’ disk(s). But it’s not recommended from my point of view.

If you’re working with Lion (or above) the image will mount automatically if the network connection is available. But you can change that in the System Preferences.

Another off topic note (or recommendation):
You should save an XML of the project, then use my MTT app to collect used FX and create a backup installer for those FX used. Though the app doesn’t handle all commercial FX it will give you a survey about what’s missing or not — in case you want to use the images on another machine or a ‘freshed up‘ machine.

What you can do is use an XML.
Export the sequence as XML.
Re-import the XML and leave the “Reconnect Media” unchecked.
Now all your clips in the new sequence are offline — without touching the original sequence.
Copy/Paste those clips to the original sequence on a new track.
Make this clips nested.
Apply a mask to cut out everything which is not the clip name.
Move the nested clip to a position where it should appear in the final video.
Render.

As said 2 years ago you also can use my TCR Plus, it gives you some more options — but it’s not free for the extended version.

As Tom said the warning icon could be a sign for missing media, but you should be able to export an XML.

Have you tried to reconnect media? It should show you which media are missing or have bad formats.

I had a lot of trouble with multiclips which where synced incorrectly by FCPX. I did corrections manually and with the next launch of FCPX I got the caution sign and lost all synced audio (it was still there). Even worse was that they didn’t show up within the event anymore except a very few, while the XML showed about 190 (it’s always around this amount for a scene here)
Strange thing was that obviously all these errors where created by compound clips.

So you should describe carefully what you have done (within this event)
