File name display on video?
Posted by Chris Tomkins on March 9, 2010 at 1:52 amDoes anyone know if there is a filter to write the file name over a clip (in the same way we used to use timecode display). I’ve got hundreds of DSLR clips that I’d like the client to choose their favourite takes, but I have no distinctive timecode on the clips, so they really need to know what they’re called..
Also, is it correct to assume there is no way to “Log and Transfer” Canon 7D clips?
Cheers

March 9, 2010 at 3:43 amYou can use a text generator to do this.

March 9, 2010 at 3:47 amYes, I was hoping for something more automated than that. I have over 400 video files and I figured if Final Cut Pro knows the metadata of the name of the file, there might be a filter that would “burn” that information onto each clip, like with the timecode generator…

March 9, 2010 at 3:50 amI’ve never tried it, but you could look into Traffic from xmEdit.

March 9, 2010 at 11:24 amHi Chris,
You may try my free TCR Plus. It’s not an easy one step filter as there is no option within FCP to retrieve clip names or any other thing beside TC and Reel, but you can copy the clip name to the filter. There is an app which comes along with the filter which allows you to batch insert whatever you want from the basic comments, description etc. using XML, but that app is not free.

March 9, 2010 at 4:31 pmI’m with you Chris, I’ve been wondering about such a plug-in as well. There have been many occasions when this would have been very useful. I hope someone knows of a plug-in.
Best,

October 3, 2010 at 6:30 pmDo this —
1) Make a duplicate of your sequence
2) right-click that new sequence “make sequence clips independent”
3) right-click sequence and “make offline”The sequence now becomes a giant batch of “OFFLINE [filename]” visuals. Take this sequence, and drag it back over-top of the original sequence (which has the media still connected). Then crop off everything except the filename.
It’s going to take a while to render out the new sequence – but it works.
Apple should really just include a filter to do this… it’s really stupid.

May 26, 2012 at 3:52 amHello Daniel. You idea is ingenious. Now my problem is that when I make the copy offline the clips in the original sequence goes offline as well. I did do: 2) right-click that new sequence “make sequence clips independent”. Do you know what I may be doing wrong?
Thank you and have a wonderful day.

May 26, 2012 at 11:50 amOh man, it’s been almost 2 years since I made that post. Brings back memories.
The “make clips independent” is the supposed to be the factor that turns this sequence offline, while keeping the other online. I am not sure why this isn’t working for you.
There is also another solution using a paid product, TitleExchangePro. I ended up switching to that soon after using this method. It’s a bit more of an elegant solution.
Lastly, I will admit that I switched to Avid a couple months after this I haven’t looked back. I mention this because this feature, if it’s important to you, is something that’s built directly into Avid’s timecode generator. You wouldn’t believe my relief when I found that out.
