  • Adam Duguay beat me to the punch on compression, I stick with PNG’s when trying to keep my HD transportable and lossless for different apps/platforms but you’re dealing with pretty big sizes. My first instinct would be to try photo-jpg QT’s with maximum quality. It does hold up very well and the filesize gains (or would it be losses, hehe) are dramatic. I have worked with a similar system, i think, when doing work for a nightclub here in NYC with a unique 360degree projection setup, but it was NTSC video I was dealing with (scripts kept playback from multiple DPS Perceptions in sync, each PVR fed it’s own projector).

Feel free to contact me in private if ya need any rendering support. we’re pretty able over here. I predict a great amount of downtime due to rendering if you’re working on standard boxes.

The link in my sig might offer an alternative? 🙂 We’ve been kept busy on some film projects but AE projects are never are problem (in terms of set up and portability) so I don’t have a problem squeezing it into the queue.

also worth mentioning, something we’ve been working on for about a year is almost ready for release, and was designed with AE primarily in mind (since it’s the app I personally use the most). it’s a renderfarm in box called “the Cluster” and this network appliance will be the best friend AE ever had.

note: I personally HATE spam, especially in forums like the cow, but I thought this stuff was pertinent to the discussion. thanks.

I do a lot of animation for marketing clients, there is a constant approval process throughout the job… I am always ready to post files for approval as both sorenson3 and wmv9 or whatever the client “requires” but I try to push my client in a direction that makes my life a little easier. The wmv’s make the daily uploads of animation changes easier on me.

ofcourse, for the web, ya gotta think of everyone.

Sorenson3 has always been one of my favorite codecs for web playback, however it doesn’t make the smallest files. For any codec, using less keyframes will make a smaller final file. you can also try massaging the content a little, apply a touch of blur and desaturate. This will help the codec do it’s job of compressing more effeciently.

also worth noting, WM8 and WM9 look as amazing and makes smaller files which do progressively download. I have not touched Sorenson3 for web stuff in quite some time because of this.

Woops, just realized you wrote that you played the QT on the PC and it sounded ok… is that correct? if so, then you do not have a missing codec issue. sorry to skim the message so fast buddy.

I agree that platforms differences are negligable… I have run into this problem before and found that I was missing the correct audio codec. AE didn’t complain about it, just left the QT silent. If you know the source of the QT is likely to deal in standards, then I’d make sure QT is updated on the PC. if it’s possible that the QT has some funky audio codec in use, then ask the author maybe.

June 6, 2005 at 12:17 am in reply to: stupid question, but how do you flip flop?

Not sure if I’m understanding exactly what you need, but you can scale to negative values.

Select the layer you wish to flip, Hit S to rollout the Scale attribute, unlock “constrain proportions” thingy (next to the 100,100 values) if you intend to only flip vertically or horizontally. Then pop in a value of -100 where appropriate.

    hope that helps.

June 5, 2005 at 7:35 pm in reply to: relationship btwn Camera and Comp sizes

Yeah, that works but then all processing is happening at 1920×1080 resulting is super long rendering. by changing project settings for all comps to 720×480 rendering times change drastically. Eyeballing it isn’t sooo bad but I thought someone could explain the science of the camera to me… thanks for the replies.

June 5, 2005 at 10:19 am in reply to: Easy Pan and Scan for HDV footage?

oh no, all useful stuff as I try to wrap my head around this. when I say “frame” the actors, i’m referring to isolation of a 720×480 (or thereabouts) region within the hdv wide angle in lieu of actually using a tripod and zooming in and out. I thought I could do a much more pro looking job in the editing pass. what should i know about the diff aspect ratios?

thanks for the advice and insight Greg.

Yes, it’s very cool from the first second you start playing with it… I didn’t mention that I added the logo (via the plugin) and the colored bars are my own handywork…. but I’m sure you figured that much out. The plugin has so many presets too, even ones where the camera is underwater! I highly recommend it…. too bad I don’t have access to it anymore myself, I got to use it at a studio I sometimes freelance for 🙁
