    Hi guys,
I’ve got a 2:30 minute clip in AE that I am trying to export to put online. I’m pretty sure sorenson3 will be best for size and compatibility. yeah?

I’ve tried a couple different settings, 480×270 and around 40 – 50 Kbytes/sec but am still getting a file about 12MB. can I get it smaller? any tips of what settings to use?

    Cheers

Sorenson3 has always been one of my favorite codecs for web playback, however it doesn’t make the smallest files. For any codec, using less keyframes will make a smaller final file. you can also try massaging the content a little, apply a touch of blur and desaturate. This will help the codec do it’s job of compressing more effeciently.

also worth noting, WM8 and WM9 look as amazing and makes smaller files which do progressively download. I have not touched Sorenson3 for web stuff in quite some time because of this.

While it’s not universal, you get a lot of bang for your buck with DivX. I tend not to use it because not everyone has the codec on their PC or MAc.

Also, worth mentioning, if you plan on putting up a lot of stuff on the web, a great tool for compressing and keeping the quality up is Sorenson Squeeze – a program from the people who created the sorenson codec. It does a great job of compressing – there’s even an option to cap the file size, and Squeeze will do whatever it has to to make it stick to that.

You need to use cleaner or some other dedicated compression app. Have you dropped the frame rate to 15 instead of 30. Also, drop the sound to mp3 at 22khz mono (but 16bit) and you’ll get good results. Make your image 320×240 if it’s 4:3. Cleaner will do a better job at compression than just quicktime from AE. But your file size seems ok. My demo online is 1:47 and is 7.7mb, sorensen 3.

thanks, I’ve got access to a cleaner, but not squeeze so I will see what it can do.

I’ve got small WMVs for WM9 and they look good, but I keep getting people replying that they can’t open it. I wouldn’t want a possible employer to not look at my work because they can’t be bothered updated their media player.

    Cheers for the help.

If that’s the case, keep your reel online in more than one format.

I would say at least do it as Quicktime and WMV. Maybe even MPEG-1 too.

I do a lot of animation for marketing clients, there is a constant approval process throughout the job… I am always ready to post files for approval as both sorenson3 and wmv9 or whatever the client “requires” but I try to push my client in a direction that makes my life a little easier. The wmv’s make the daily uploads of animation changes easier on me.

ofcourse, for the web, ya gotta think of everyone.

I’m in the same boat, but I find quicktime is better. But that has to do with your workflow, and what they can see. If they can’t see quicktimes, then you find a format they can read.

But if you upload stuff to the web regularly (which I do, as well), you need a program like squeeze or cleaner to make it web ready.

AE renders compression very slowly, and since it can’t really analyze the info as it renders, it doeasn’t do a great job of making it look clean.

Programs like Cleaner and Squeeze are designed to do just that, and while i can’t speek for cleaner (but am betting this is the case) they work quickly.
