You can read the whitepapers on RDX for the shelf life expectations. It doesn’t require regular spinning up since the heads are parked which is what causes damage when normal drives sit. Thus it becomes a long-term option – but still magnetic like LTO.

While this suggestion is not about a specific folder/directory structure, I think it gets to the heart of your organization goals. Are you familiar with Square Box System’s cataloging software: CatDV? I’d suggest looking at a copy to help you keep track of your media assets. There’s a free trial. (there’s a CatDV forum here on Creative Cow)

You might also be interested in Imagine’s ShotPut Pro for creating naming conventions as well as automatically offloading/transferring media to multiple locations.

Sorry – you may already be familiar with these solutions and just want a better folder/directory convention – but just in case…

I’d laugh, but I’m worried some of those things aren’t as far fetched as they once seemed.

The Belden thing might happen in reverse – Blackmagic always said they wanted to be the Grass Valley of the future.

Not that I think they’ll do it anytime soon, but I always wanted to see Blackmagic release a low cost fixed lens camcorder.

After releasing their eGPU product, I wonder if they could actually release an editing appliance. Who really needs laptops/PCs anymore – and they’re making all the software needed anyway. Maybe a Linux-based portable system like an Intel NUC ready to accessorize with Thunderbolt 3.

I haven’t used the AV-HS410 to control cameras in a while (just demoed it long ago), but I agree that it would be preferable to use an external control. While I recommend Panasonic cameras/controllers, you might also look at PTZOptics as their controller and cameras are very comparable while much less expensive. The cost savings might make the difference in getting a stand-alone controller. With some of that money you save, you might even get the model with NDI included for future-proofing your purchase.

One format very few people mention is RDX. But for those looking for something of a compromise between using a RAID system for backup or LTO for archive, I think RDX is an excellent choice. You can get a 5TB cartridge and a USB 3 dock for under $700. Just add additional 5TB cartridges as needed. Not for everyone, but a really great option no one seems to talk about.

I think you’ll do better to keep saving your money and investing in a new laptop. Do you have Thunderbolt on that system? If not, then there’s no external acceleration available.
