    Thanks Graeme,
Always great to hear from you…… The nay sayers are very amusing aren’t they ? Bad time to be investing in $100K cameras.

    Hi Jan,
Yes, indeed the zebras are great as a basic tool but a WF would be so much better. I’m hoping to buy the Pana17″ monitor next month , that will be a big help.

P.S. If you are compiling any sort of wish list however, please put a WF monitor in the next camera.

    Hi Ken,
I don’t really know of any tool like you describe… the most important thing is to get the best exposure possible. What I try to do on every shot (if I don’t get lazy) is to check my exposure on my laptop with the waveform in FCP. I wish camera manufacturers with include this function in camera. Beyond that you are at the mercy of the chip size; much has been made of the HVX noise, some like it some don’t. I think it looks pretty good when properly exposed/lit,much like film grain. Also, the grain always looks worse when you are looking at a still versus the moving footage. I say , let it go and go make some beautiful pictures.

On the photography side I have been all digital since 1990 when I got my first digital back (4megapixel). I currently shoot with a 39mp back and in all those years of manipulating pixels I’ve blurred chanels only for a special effects. I have always found the filter sets you mention gimicky and never as good as what you can achieve with photoshop.Yes, experimentation is essential in all art forms and while blurring chanels on high resolution stills can reduce noise doing so on video, in my opinion is a very bad idea.

You really can’t judge video from stills.. having said that, The image is underexposed, at least on my Mac. The noise looks about normal for 1/3 inch camera; doesn’t look bad as far as noise goes. As for blurring channels….I would never do that.
