April 8, 2006 at 12:01 pm in reply to: Premiere Pro Versus Final Cut Pro

    Hi…

    Just to be fair:
“1. In premiere if you want to trim the head of a clip and automatically have the rest of the project (or clip) slide over to fill the trim, you push CTRL. I asked many FCP users and no one new of a way to do it. I’m not saying it can’t “close the gap” in fact, it tries closing the gap even when it shouldn’t, but it is nice to be able to grab a clip and shorten/lengthen a clip by holding down CTRL.”

Answer: This is accomplished by using the Ripple tool when performing the timeline Trim (keyboard shortcut RR)

“2. When you slow footage down, there is no magical “Maintain Audio Pitch” button, which isn’t used all the time but it can be used. (it really isn’t a big deal, but I was shocked that the program that everyone says they love and is the best didn’t have all of Premiere’s features and then some, it actually had different features)”

Answer: Unlink the events ont he FCP timeline Prior to doing the timeline based speed change. Also FCP will natively allow speed ramping something Pre Pro does not do.

As far as After Effects is concerned: FCP + Automatic Duck is a great combo for that workflow…It’s not dynamic linking, but it will get you into AE pretty painlessly.

I’m not talking down Premiere, I spend more time in it these days.
But I want the options out there.

    Cheers…

    Alex

    Let me clarify…

further testing shows I can do this with DV, but not HDV…

    Anyone able to duplicate this?

    Thanks…

April 3, 2006 at 2:26 pm in reply to: Image Matte, Track Matte, Alpha channels…

Rememebr that technically….Luma versus Alpha is really eactly the same thing in terms of result…

If I have a gray scale image… That’s going to be luma as you will be looking the RGB channels of the image as opposed to the A(lpha)

Alpha is convenient if you want to refernce the Alpha Channel of an RGBA image…

typically this won’t look like a gray scale image when you view it… but the alpha is built in as the fouth channel…

So really you directing the filter as to which channel(s) should it be looking at in the refernce matte image…

    that’s all..

March 30, 2006 at 3:01 pm in reply to: HDV Delivery to Cable Networks via Cineform Aspect HD

    Hi Brett…

Sorry…I should have been more clear…

I agree with the delivery fomrat issue…

What I’m trying to determine is if Cable networks give push back for content that gathered HDV and transcoded and posted with Cineform….

Regardless of the final tape format it’s delviered on….

March 29, 2006 at 10:21 pm in reply to: track matte issue

    Hi Perry…

    I think it’s a matter of Processing order…

the tracl matte will look at the RGB(A) of the matte as an image Pre any transforms that have been applied…

By creating a sequence you are essentially nesting those transforms…so when you use that as a source now it’s seeing you animation on top of the static matte as a travelling matte…

    that’s why this works… 🙂

March 19, 2006 at 8:19 pm in reply to: PPRO 2.0 vs FCP?

    very similar.

I think the trimming is better in FCP.
Now that Pre Pro has curves in the FX editor, I like it more for efx editing.
FCP has After Effects like transfer modes on the timeline. Premiere has a few under the Key fx…

I also like the fact that you can slow mo a clip in Pre Pro with out extedning it’s length on the timeline. This is a nice option missing from FCP slow mo…but then again….FCP has time warping built in….

    It’s a toughie….

March 16, 2006 at 2:03 am in reply to: Boris Light FX…

    Wow…what a pain…

I orignally built the piece I was working using the Avid repo tools built into the text for animating and scaling a text object….

then the Producer says he wanted shine fx at specific parts…

so I split the clip and apply the Light Sweep FX…and I have to rebuild the move in the Light FX plug…and the coordinate systems don’t match Avid native coords…

    ugh…

I did get it done though…

Now I see why ppl do stuff in compositing apps and just assemble in Avid….

regardless of how many layers it has….

sometimes it’s just easier to do this stuff elsewhere….
