Software RAID1 is totally fine – there is such a low overhead with it, I don’t think you’ll notice any performance hit. Will it be Windows or Linux?

Would you be able to put together a Newegg wishlist and make it public? I think with the decent chassis, RAM, and Windows license it will be more like $1200-1500.

UltraScope does not need much from the PC except PCIe bus to transfer data to the graphics card which then uses hardware OpenGL calls (if I understand right) to do that thing it does.
So your PC is totally fine – a lesser machine will do – however it’s hard to say up front if there might be some sort of a compatibility issue as I am sure BMD hasn’t tested that particular machine or motherboard type.
The GTS420 graphics card may be fine – it seems to support hardware OpenGL – but no guarantees unless someone actually tried it. For one of my clients, ATI Radeon HD 3450 didn’t work (no hardware OpenGL), GeForce 8800GTS did even though it’s not formally supported by BMD.
So the Dell Vostro 460 will most likely be fine; you may have to replace the GTS420 with something else.

That’s basically the only current choice (and not a bad one at that) – quite a few clients of mine are using those on Mac Pros, in OSX 10.6 and Win7-64 in Bootcamp – I have yet to hear of any crashes or incompatibilities – yet I hear some people experience instability in Mac OSX:

How were you connecting Axio LE to HDMI? Axio LE does not have HDMI I/O if I remember right:

Only Cat2 HDMI cables are guaranteed to work for up to 49ft:

It doesn’t mean a Cat1 won’t work, it’s just only Cat2 is guaranteed so. Bottom line, it seems that you’d want to order a Cat2 cable.
Also, if you ever plan to monitor 1080p, 4K, 3D (i.e. transmit that signal over to the TV), you may need to get an HDMI extender, or a cable that is specifically guaranteed to transmit 4K/3D.

My understanding was they use several different types depending on cable length requirements. The BIG difference between them and other players – no special tweaks on the client side. To get full 110MB/s on the client’s GbE port, nothing needs to be done. I did a very crude file transfer test – not even direct but through two unmanaged switches – and got 110MB/s on a Z800 built-in GbE port on 4GB file transfer. No tweaks or adjustments at all.
They say the numbers are just outrageous on 10G connections: over 1GB/s on Linux, 700MBs Windows, 350MB/s OSX.
The “secret” sauce is their ability to pull data off the hard disks and pipe it into the NICs.

One more thing: with Apple seemingly abandoning enterprise (xserve) and professional markets (pro video apps), is there much future for a Mac Pro? I just don’t see it being a high priority for Apple given most of what it can do, can be done iMacs and MBPs with Thunderbolt, maybe with the exception of serious graphics and OpenGL, or serious computing power.
I would not be surprised if Apple says goodbye to Mac Pros as well, eventually. They have little reason not to.

A Mac Pro would be in the same price range per GHz as the Z800 (which is also dual socket but comes in single CPU configurations).
Z400 only has two hard drive bays (and 4 optical drive bays) which limits its internal storage options.
The Windows platform has the advantage of a much wider choice of graphics cards for CS5 GPU accel – but that’s a moot point if you are set on the Q4K.
The Z400 is more compact and comes with a 3-year on-site warranty included – something that can’t be said about anything Mac.
Other than that, it’s a matter of personal preference, I think.
