Where was the media kept – SAN, NAS, or moved locally for editing purposes? What were the file formats?

A good controller, high quality drives and the right configuration (e.g. don’t use RAID5 on just three drives, watch your write caching, and don’t play with setup buttons during write operations) – are keys to optimized and well performing arrays. A chassis is important as well, it needs to be of sufficient quality for the application.
You can come up with RAID arrays for $200 to $200K+ – even for a single Mac Pro. So knowing your criteria and what exactly were the failures will make it easier to come up with recommendations.
What were the failures – the card, the chassis? What failed, exactly? Was there loss of data? What is the RAID level used? Which Areca card is it exactly?

The power supplies could be redundant (only one operating at a time) which means a 450VA UPS should suffice – but you’d first want to find out the peak power usage of the array from the vendor.
Usually (but not always): the higher the VA rating of the UPS, the longer the runtimes – so you’d probably want to choose your UPS depending on the nature of the power trips (long? momentary?).
Or, like Bob Zelin says, just buy the biggest baddest UPS you can afford. 🙂

BMD PCIe (PCI Express) 1x cards can be used in PCIe 16x slots but the photo shows a bunch of PCI (not PCIe) and an AGP slot, none of which is interchangeable. Gotta have a motherboard with PCI Express slots – not PCI, and PCI-X.
I don’t think this motherboard will work. 🙁

Hardware OpenGL is the name of the game for Smoke and many other Autodesk apps. I don’t believe Cuda architecture is used in those. This is why you don’t see any GeForce cards on their system recommendations.

CatDV offers no collaborative editing AFAIK – but then does anyone else outside Avid Unity and the now defunct FCS?
Another MAM on the affordable side is Focus Enhancement range of solutions.
Any idea how these (Focus, CatDV) compare to enterprise class systems like Viz ArDome and IPV? (I can’t be the only one wandering in the dark :))
