Lenovo W530 mobile workstation is one of the best deals around at about $2K nicely configured:
– Core i7-3610QM
– 16GB RAM
– NVIDIA Quadro K2000M Graphics 2GB
– 1920×1080 display
– Win7 Pro 64-bit
– 3-year warrantyIt has an IPS display, USB 3.0, MiniDP, the new “K” series NVidia Quadro card, takes up to 32GB memory.
Similar HP and Dell models will be a few hundred more.
If this is outside your budget, Lenovo IdeaPad Y580 comes with GTX-660M and similar specs for around $1K.

I’ve heard mixed things about Lenovo support, plus it’s not a US company; if you prefer one from a US or a Japanese company, I’ll dig out more info on those.

Indeed; I only mentioned it because it’s a big deal for Mac people who could really use dual high-end GPUs for a certain color correction application. (I don’t think I can mention its name on this forum… :P)

Thanks Jim! Just to avoid confusion: it’s Quadro K5000, not just 5000. Some highlights:
– 1536 CUDA cores (vs. 448 in in the more expensive Quadro 6000)
– 4GB GDDR5 RAM
– dual slot PCIe 3.0
– 173GB/s bandwidth (vs. 144GB/s in Quadro 6000)
– 2150 Gflops single precision (vs. 1030 in Q6K)
– 90 Gflops double precision (vs. 515, 359 and 243 in Q6K, Q5K and Q4K, respectively)
– 1.8 billion triangles per second (vs. 1.3 billion in Q6K, 950 million in Q4K)
– 122W max power consumption (vs. 204, 152, 142 in Q6K, Q5K and Q4K)
– $2250 SRPThe fact that it only consumes 122W peak power – less than a single-slot and much less powerful Quadro 4000, allows to use two of them in a Mac Pro – although with two of them, it seems that only one slot remains available (for an I/O or a RAID card).
I believe (but could be wrong) that this is also the first high end Quadro card allowing to hook up more than two monitors simultaneously.

Thanks for posting this, Maris – looks like it’s an issue with the Areca card’s brain.
Areca 1882x, 8x Enterprise class HGST 7K3000 2TB 6G drives in RAID6, CineRAID CR-R16E: 996.5MB/s writes, 479MB/s reads.
(These numbers are more than fine for the client; but they do indicate that something’s not right, performance-wise. The host machine is Early 2008 xServe running model 10.6.8.)
The numbers are fairly close to yours, given that it’s RAID6, and because the drives are (a) 6G, (b) quite different from yours, (c) have been tested by Areca, this indicates an issue with Areca controller.
I will send my numbers to Areca and see what they have to say. If you have a chance to borrow an R380 or R680, I would love to see what kind of numbers you will get.

What RAID level is this, RAID0? (Sorry if I missed it in the post.)
I’d:
– check the cabling first, replace it
– reset the controller CMOS to defaults
– check the drives individually (bench each one, bench a couple in RAID0)
– try to get a replacement controller and see what happens.From the look of it, cabling is the first suspect, the controller – number two.
