RAID6 with just four drives is not very practical, and while you may get peak read speeds of 500MB/s (when drives are empty), write speeds will be lower – unless you use SSDs. For arrays where performance matters (not just redundancy), it’s recommended to have at least 6-8 drives in a RAID6 set.
Four HGST 7K4000 3TB drives in RAID6 will give you 6TB usable capacity; about 400-550MB/s peak read speeds with ATTO R680 (not Areca 1882 – it has issues), and I am guessing 250-350MB/s peak write speeds.
Speeds will drop down to about 50% of peak values when drives get full or fragmented.
To sustain 500MB/s r/w speeds throughout the surface of a RAID6 array, it has to be at least 12 high performance 7200rpm drives. Why I think that: using 8 drives in RAID6 on R680 gives about 700MB/s peak write speeds (read speeds are 1GB/s and up); divide this number by 2 to arrive at sustainable write speeds of about 350MB/s; you would need at least another 3-4 drives to bring it up to 500MB/s.

Did you say 127? One hundred twenty seven? Holy Cow!
And ten layers of uncompressed 4.5K? 8-bit?
(Isn’t that, like, over 200MB/s for a 4.5K 8-bit 4:2:2 stream? If so, this is a bit strange – 8 spinning drives shouldn’t be able to get there even in RAID0.)

ATTO got good products, has an eye on video / media applications (as well as enterprise) – so their R6 series controllers are my preferred alternative to Areca for now, as well. I’ve seen over 1GB/s reads on RAID5 on 8 drives, 1.6GB/s on 16 with ATTO R680.
They do get hot, so good airflow will help.

Hi Adam,
Didn’t go to IBC and was looking forward to seeing the video about “a special build of Premiere Pro running GPU-accelerated Mercury effects in Windows on OpenCL” – but all I saw was a 10-second mentioning of it in the video – no demo, no benchmarks, no details of any sort.
Did I miss it? If I didn’t, do you have any technical information on it?

Yes it will due to much faster GPU acceleration with the supported NVidia card.

That’s exactly it: G-Speed eS’s RAID “brain” is on that eSATA card. G-Speed Q is the model with the brain inside the box – that one can be used on anything with an eSATA, USB or FireWire connection.
If you want G-Speed eS to be accessible on an MBP, your best bet might be sharing it on a Mac Pro, and accessing it from MBP over the network.
