Bryan,
I’ve just read your thread with great interest. We’re currently using a (now full) editshare and being advised to move onto a CAT DV system to log and capture our P2 footage, backing up our P2 media to LT04 tape (we already have the tape drive and I’ve managed to get it to work on Windows 7…finally…)
I’m trying to get my head round the whole thing and your point about identifying 1 clip and pulling it back from your LT04 tape is really interesting.
Surely you’d have to pull in the entire backed up P2 card from the tape and find the clip from it? If so what’s the point in having CatDV when you can probably guess that shot’s on a particular P2 card and it’ll reactivate all the bins once you’ve put that P2 card ‘live’ again (assuming you’re not consolidating media).
Or am I missing the point of CatDV completely?
Is there any chance I could speak to you about this on the ‘phone? We’re just about to invest in new kit an I don’t want to get it wrong!
Best

Great! Thanks very much.
While I was waiting for a reply, I just tried changing the export settings too – seemed daft but anamorphic 1024×576 has also fixed the issue.
Just couldn’t work out why the text was doing it’s own thing independently of the timeline… (used to Avid and Media 100)
Cheers for the alternative answer 🙂

Cool, thanks.
You’re right, we used AE in the end…!

interesting to see that AMC 5 now lets you Sync tracks.
Even more interesting (in a geeky way!) that the shortcut is Y to do it…Apple Y in Media 100…wonder where they got the idea…

I’ve just gone through a similar thought process the end result to me seems it’s best to initially Transcode everything to .mxf and then Consolidate it all at the end of the job onto an external drive and backup to LT0-4 tape.
Does that sound right?

Thanks Shane,
I did back up the full card, what I was missing was setting up the Virtual P2 card in the P2 reader – as I wasn’t familiar with the software I missed the tiny little Icon which is supposed to represent setting up a new virtual card.
Did that and the footage all popped up on the Reader.
I was also thrown by the P2 Camera partitioning the Caldigit drive – looks like it automatically creates a new partition every time you copy a card to it, meanwhile a PC will only see media on the Caldigit and not the empty space left on it.
Cheers

Hi there, thanks but aren’t those vids Mac and FCP based?

Cancel that, we’ve just found the footy, sounds silly but it was buried in amongst all the HD stuff and we just couldn’t find it!
Apologies if you’ve read this.
