Actually, in this case, the file is not being down-converted. It starts out as an uncompressed 4×3 720×486 file and is then converted to ProRes. I did try the “preserve aspect ratio” setting under “Output Image Insert (Padding)” but that did not change the result. Neither did changing that setting to “4×3 1.33:1.”

Do you mean in Compressor or in QuickTime? I haven’t found this particular setting in Compressor.

We were having this same issue. Very frustrating until we found the fix – which is really simple. Once you export your clip from the timeline, open the resulting .mov file in Quicktime Pro. Open the Movie Properties window. Under the Presentation tab, un-check the “Conform aperture to” check mark. Your movie should change size to 720×486. Make sure and save the file and you should be set.

  • Came across this while doing a search for the same issue. We recently upgraded to FCP 7 and have been having this File Error issue. It happens with all sorts of files – JPG, TGA, WAV, AIF. The only work around we’ve found is to use Preview to re-export the still files and QT to re-export the audio files. Seems like such a waste of valuable time when these files were importing fine in the previous version. Might there be any new info on this issue?

I’ve tried importing the EDL directly into FCP and it crashes the application.

Actually I’m not able to convert ANY edl file made outside of FCP. A little more background: Several months ago I tried this very workflow on the previous version of Final Cut Studio and it worked just fine. Now I’m trying what I believe to be the same steps in Final Cut Studio 2 and it is not working. I was wondering if perhaps there was a step I was leaving out. When I open the EDL in TextEdit it looks exactly as it should look. Could there be something in a setup menu that’s missing?

It does have “.edl” at the end. I tried removing the file extension just in case but that made no difference.
