The goal is to be able to re-archive VHS and S-VHS without being software dependent, but rather hardware / embedded chip protocols so there is no worry that the product being used one day no longer works.

The cost was not that much, I think it was $129.00. I still l have conversion harness, it just is no longer supported. It just seems odd to not support a physical piece of gear. I don’t mind buying something else, some that is in theory much more flexible and updated. However, if I go on Amazon there are all kinds of analog gaming R-Y, B-Y, Y interfaces for anywhere from 10 bucks to 30 bucks. I am wondering if the basic R-Y, B-Y, Y market has been abandoned because of the gaming products that appear to mimic what the higher end boxes do at a much lower cost. At this point, if Black Magic Design has their products on display in the Los Angeles area, I’m fine with bringing in a component analog machine if we can hook it up so I can see how it interfaces. But, I have many already completed edited Masters on tape, so I want to be able to transfer it as pure as possible and not be forced into putting it onto a timeline when all that is needed is a straight to digital hi quality file transfer that can then be re-transferred as necessary to the ever growing HD universe.

I know nothing about any of this but I have an idea. Can you tabulate how many total bits, or disk memory before and then after and see if it has changed any? If it has changed and in theory would be lower than before, then perhaps one could assume the disk has figured out how to ignore the bad spots. If the amount is identical before and after, not sure what that would mean.
