You can not speed up AUDIO beyond 4X, but you can render it, bring it to the timeline and speed up again, or use nested projects.

Prodad have another standalone tool – ReSpeedr, which can slow down and stabilize at the same time, but their Mercalli is the best to stabilize footage.

Vegas Pro has Automatic Crossfades option in the Options menu. I guess Movie Studio also has it. Turn it off when you arrange clips.
