If you have installed PP 12.1 you are just at the very beginning of ‘things going wrong”.

My advice; before you start any projects is to RUN!!! back to PP 2017, and wait for Adobe to get of their arrogant posterior and fix the currant version.

“The client needs a smaller one for the DVD and I don’t think they want an mpeg-2 to create in encore.”

If that is the case, don’t bother with burning a DVD using toast (which has very limited creative tools to make a DVD); unlike Encore and DVD Studio Pro, which have elaborate creative tools built into the app.

Shane is correct – you need more info from your client, but mpg-2 and an audio file IS what you need for an SD DVD.
ALSO, if they are planning an elaborate DVD, with a motion graphics menu, etc. You need to know this, because that will bite into your bit budget (see how I did that ;-).

Creating files for DVD output is a bit of a dark art, where you manage your encode rate to optimize the quality, while still fitting it into your size DVD requirement of max 4.4 GB. That’s why you need to understand what your client is up to creatively.
For a set top player you need to stay within an encode range (as Shane suggests) so that its playable. How low you go depends on the size (length of your content).

  • Katherine,
This issue with 12.1 is well documented in many below threads. Take a read, and it will help you understand and (possibly) work around the problem.

The simplest thing to do is re-install and work with 12.0 for the time being, until Adobe releases a patch.

They have been abysmal with the 12.1 and subsequent 12.1.1 releases.

Mike – it’s this version of PP.
I simply renamed a file, not the appendage, and it worked.
This version (12.1 and 12.1.1) is a mess. And a characteristic is that it works inconsistently. There are previous posts here that will describe the issues.

A sure bet solution is to role back to 12.0, and wait until Adobe straightens out its mess before further upgrades.

If you are using 12.1 (newest release), that is likely your problem.

There have been multiple import issues with this release. Even Adobe moderators on their posting board admit it.
The standard work-around has been to either transcode (which you did) or re-name the file.

It is always helpful if you include version info when posting about issues.

    Hope this helps to clarify.

To Mike’s point, shooting the Powerpoint (they are always there) on a second camera is critical. That camera can be almost anything, as all you want is reference points to cut in your slides in post. I never try to shoot quality images off the screen from a projected powerpoint. Synchronizing camera starts and having audio is important to make the editing easier. You can just line up the two waveforms from both cameras.

Another audio trick (for safety). In addition to the master line feed off the house board, I attach a lavalier to the podium mike, and secure it with black tape. I use this as my second feed, so if the house audio fails (or I get a line hum), I still have quality audio (not a shotgun, which is awful if you are in the back of a room).
