Whoa David, I was with you all the way until you said blow up 33%. Don’t you think that is a little steep for DV? With plain old DV (depending on the source camera) I usually start to notice some degrading characteristics after 12%.

    Sarah,

The key to using the VO tool is a good mike (as in any situation); and a proper setting. I have used this with good success; however I found it impossible to do on my main editing suite, which runs a G5 with 1,000 internal fans (go intel). As a solution, I do this in another area using my MacBook Pro laptop. The results have been as good as the room I am in.

    Good luck

    Well guys,
Thank you again for your suggestions. I did forget about checking format in the items properties section. In the few anamorphic projects that I have handled; it is the easiest mistake not to check that off. However adjusting that as well as the sequence settings still gave me my two black bars; so wide screen was not the answer. I also shot this straight out to a video monitor directly from the deck; only to see the same problem.

    Thank you Rennie –
I tried the anamorphic setting already. Not it. Another colleague has suggested that it was shot as letterbox; in which case I think somebody will be executed come Monday!

Aso be aware that you have similar options if you use Motion. If you produce graphics in Motion at 16 or 32 bits; and then bring it into FCP and render at 8 bits, you will not benefit.

I also have a Lacie 500 gig (firewire 800- Dual G5 2.7ghz.); and experienced the identical set of spin-down problems. System Preferences > Energy Saver> Sleep (set to never) solved my problem immediately. There is a default at the bottom of the window that says “Put the hard disk(s) to sleep when possible”. Make sure that the box is UNCHECKED.

    Ben,
I must say that I do consider you “the man” on compression; and read this thread with interest, as I have been having some mixed results with the new QT7/FCP5/Compressor line-up. I decided to plow forward and download a trial version of Bitvice 1.6 (their most recent offering) and perform my own test. Overall I will agree that I saw little difference between the two; however I saw some significant superiorities in and around transitions (simple 20 frame cross-desolves). Where I was getting some very blocky results with compressor, they were flawless out of bitvice. I also noticed less background fluctuations in areas with thin mids. This was using the same Quicktime, out of FCP5. A 12 minute video, 4/3 shot with mini DV. I used all default settings in Bitvice.
I will also point out that I can correct the flaws out of compressor by engaging the filter that reduces noise; however this added an overall “dulling” effect to the entire video (almost like adding a gausean blur).
