Rafael, thanks for your response to William Stewart, it helped me a lot.
The question I have is that once I extract the Closed Caption track from a Quicktime video file, besides copying and add it to another Quicktime file, how do I go about repurposing the Closed Caption track so it can be used in DVD Studio Pro 4? I realize DVDSP can only created CC’d videos if I supply it a separate .scc or .cc file, but can this extracted Closed Caption track be converted so it can be used in DVDSP?

    Thanks in advance.

February 21, 2012 at 2:02 pm in reply to: Video disappears when Selectiong Variable Speed

I tried the solutions listed here and though re-selecting “variable” does bring the preview of the video back, I cannot play the video in Motion and adding keyframes is pretty much impossible.

But the solution I found was two-fold.

I was right-clicking a video clip in my FCP timeline, selecting “send to Motion”, also, this clip in my FCP timeline did not have the same Compressor as my timeline nor any of the other clips in this timeline. So I “export > Using Quicktime Conversion” the chosen clip from my FCP preview window creating a new clip with the same compressor as my FCP timeline compressor, then in Motion > File Browser tab > select the “newly exported QT file you just made” and import it into your Motion project. Voila! You can perform variable speed tricks to your heart’s delight with this video clip and then either export it as a new finished QT clip to import into FCP or import this new Motion project into FCP and render. I know this response is a year old but better late than never.

    Stephen,
Thanks for the tip! I gave it a whirl and it works but like I said earlier, the moving objects were blurred from the get-go and even Cinema Tools conform couldn’t de-blur the thrown objects. One other thing with the Cinema Tools Conform then Optical Flow process, the objects that were thrown cast shadows on the actor’s face which caused some really funky morphing pattern/effect on the actor’s face! Hmmmm, keep in mind for future video projects!

December 2, 2010 at 5:25 pm in reply to: Optical Flow Slow Motion Q

I just posted on FCP a 1080 24p (23.976fps) project shot with a Canon EOS still camera where the DP recommended shooting the slo mo scenes at 1080 60p (59.94fps) to be made slo mo in post using FCP.
I trusted what he was telling me but a little voice in the back of my head was screaming at me but I ignored “him”.

The scenes shot at 60p are where an actor threw objects into the air, these objects were blurry frame to frame due to the shutter speed the DP used; I have no idea what shutter speed he used, he was relying on frames per second and not shutter speed to create smoother slo mo.

Optical Flow Retiming made slo mo shots smoother but the blurred objects still looked blurred because that’s how they were recorded at a moderate shutter speed. So his suggestion of shooting them at 60p sounded good in theory but in practice wasn’t what I had hoped for due to whatever shutter angle/speed he used.

So what I’m saying is shooting at 59.94fps isn’t going to do it.
I agree with another post that stated shooting at high fps is your best bet for really good slo mo.
But if you’re stuck with the camera you have, sure shoot at 59.94fps but use a faster shutter speed to get sharp images on each frame.

April 15, 2010 at 5:07 pm in reply to: Blu Ray- burn BD later in time

    >>Daniel said, “…I’m using the new FCS. I want to burn a second Blu Ray disc a week after I made the first one. Do I have to go through the whole share process from Final Cut and create an entire new file, or can I use the already created file and just burn a new disc. Thanks…”

I too want to know the answer to this question while working within FCP or Compressor, not a third party software solution as was suggested by the previous posters.

I have searched the ‘net high and low for the answer to this question: FCP7 says you can burn a blu-ray disc or create a disc image but there are NO instructions how to take the disc image files and burn them to a blu-ray disc at a later date, so how is this done within the confines of FCP or Compressor?

October 8, 2008 at 6:40 pm in reply to: No Real-Time playback, No Print to Video??

I had a very similar problem, I’m also new to FCP editing but have been editing Avid since 1995. Anyways my problem was that my FCP timeline sequence was at 720p 59.94 but I needed to downconvert it to 525i 29.97 onto BetacamSP tape. I have the Kona LHe HD card to do realtime downconvert. Following all of Rob Forsythe’s recommendations I still had the same problem: I could playback my FCP timeline and both video and audio were reaching my Sony BetacamSP deck just fine but whenever I invoked FCP’s “edit to tape” or “print to video” command all I would get output to my Sony Beta deck was audio but NO video. So I asked my son, who’s an editor/producer/shooter for Norwegian Cruise Lines (shameless plug there) what I might be doing wrong, he suggested I Un-check FCP’s Audio/Video Settings> A/V Devices tab> Different output for Edit to Tape/Print to Video box and voila! I got downconverted 525i 29.97 video to my Sony Beta deck! Sure, I could’ve just started the Beta deck recording and just played back my timeline but I’m an old school video editor who still likes first frame of video to begin at 1.00.00.00 exactly and this can only be done with FCP’s “Edit to Tape” function; this method also allows me to go back an do insert edits on my tape master if an audio or video update has to be made… it’s all in synch and timecodes match up.
