H264 Closed Captioning
My Technical Question for Monday, Closed Captioning is the subject. I have captured a live stream with CC embedded in it to ProRes 422, No problems there. I need to trans code it to H264 and keep the CC intact. Every time I try I lose the CC. Anyone know any tricks or something I am missing?

I’m not an expert on CC but from what I gather the CC is embedded in the .mov container. What are you using to export the ProRes to H.264? Also what container for the H.264? .mov? mp4?
.mp4 afaik does not support additional streams such as CC.
Might need some more information from you to figure out on where from and where to you’re trying to go. Codec is one thing, wrapper another and then the software involved matters too!

I have tried Quicktimepro, compressor and Telestreams Episode
it is in the mov wrapperI am capturing it in FCP7 using Log and Capture in prores 422 and it get’s the CC no problem But I need the file to be in H264.
I am working with a company to upload complete TV shows for broadcast and they have to have CC. -
Hi Williams,
Open the Prores file in QT and have a look to the Properties (Cmd-J).
Do you see there a “Closed Captions Track”?

That’s very good.
FC can not manage that kind of tracks; only A/V and TC.
But you can fix it with just QT.
– Open the Prores file in QT.– Open Properties (Cmd-J)
– Extract CC Track.
– Click the CC Track window and “Select All” + “Copy”.– Open the H264file.
– “Add to Movie”.
This will embed the CC Track from one file to the other.
Works for video, audio and TC tracks.
Should work with the CC Track.

QT Pro is a gem, but all those option “will be lost in QTX, like tears…in rain …”.
I hope they add those basic functions soon.

Rafael, thanks for your response to William Stewart, it helped me a lot.
The question I have is that once I extract the Closed Caption track from a Quicktime video file, besides copying and add it to another Quicktime file, how do I go about repurposing the Closed Caption track so it can be used in DVD Studio Pro 4? I realize DVDSP can only created CC’d videos if I supply it a separate .scc or .cc file, but can this extracted Closed Caption track be converted so it can be used in DVDSP?Thanks in advance.
