I second Craig’s thoughts. Your price point is far too low. Panasonic hmc150 or higher price is what u r looking for.$3k to $8k. Save your money for the right tool. Not the right price.

The 18-135 is ok, but you likely will end up getting others. My choices have been an 18mm – 55mm, a fisheye for odd ball locations, the macro you mention, though honestly I’d likely sell you mine because I never use it, and a 70 -300 which is a fabulous piece of glass, and when wedded with the 7D is environmentally sealed, which could be an issue depending on where you live.

I agree with Frederic. I use the same settings for my 7D/T2i for highest quality. Except in 24fps (he using PAL in Europe). Make sure you choose the right setting for your continent.

the answer to your second question is that I’ve had good luck with a USB 3 drive, but I haven’t tried 4k footage. So…maybe go buy one of the small USB 3.0 portables like I bought for $125 and give it a try. I have USB on my Dell laptop, and it is *fast* but I haven’t tried real work benchmarks against my portable RAID using estata. I still tend to focus on eSata, for now. Maybe render out to the USB 3, and keep your sata freed up?

I don’t know the specs for your video card, but it may be a bottleneck. It’s been my experience that I got much more consistent preview smoothness with Apple desktops with dedicated video cards and FCP 7. I’m just now starting to do some projects in Adobe, so still can’t say whether it is better than Vegas on Windows.

So I tend to agree with the notion that you likely won’t get that ‘smooth shave’ we all are looking for , especially with 4k files.

One other issue, that may not be important, but was to me, shooting in the Pacific NW, was that the 7D is environmentally sealed, with the right Canon lenses. If you are out in a rainstorm, or subzero, or snow, or 100% humidity, this could make or break a shoot. The ‘pros’ go with Canon and Nikon in the high end because of this ruggedness. I doubt the GH2 could handle that kind of conditions.

If you have internal storage slots, or esata ports, simply buy a new 2tb drive and configure w7 on that. You can still dual boot through rom for example.

I own a full 7d outfit along with a more traditional xf305. I agree with adam & neal, but if starting from scratch i would agree with Raphael. Take a good look at the gh2. It has more adio information, but you end up with avchd, which has it’s pros and cons.i worked with avchd for two years and did not stay with it.

FCP needs both to be transcoded.

What cameras are using? Plural eyes might be a good choice,or I’d likely ty tonsync their clocks at the beginning of the game. In concerts i often keep my cameras rolling even when “off” just like audio, and edit later.this simplifies editing. You see this on live tv, where the editing is done onthe fly.you need cameras like an xf300 from canon, who’s batteries can last an hour or more, or third party batteries like the pros use (anton bauer).
