Thanks Mike. I shoot a lot of documentary style work, and it’s been in lower light clips that I’ve had the most disappointment with the 7D video footage. I’m skilled enough to know that I’m doing things ‘right’ with the shots, my xf305 stuff looks fine, but the ‘mud’ that I sometimes get with the 7D is aggravating. I assume that with the lenses I shoot with that I should do better. I’ve shot stage lit projects, as well, three camera shoots, my 305 and a friend’s GH2 and the 7D was the dog of the litter.
Last evening I took a look at the 5D review on DP-review, and that sort of clarified the ‘noise’ I was seeing with the 7D. (they do a great job of showing it against other cameras). I may hold out just a bit longer to see just how good the GH-3 is, but changing work flow, batteries and cards (lots of CF high capacity) just seems dumb to do, unless it was considerably better, which I doubt. I also think micro four thirds (as well as APS-C) is a transitional thing, that all professional cameras will be full frame sensors as soon as the technology allows it.

I had a Zoom, it died. I prefer the marantz pmd661. Yes, it has a 3.5 jack (line 2)

I don’t remember if my old T2i had AGC or not, but I think it did (the 7D does). As mentioned, that could be the problem. In that case, I believe Magic Lantern software can disable it (check before installing).
Also, if you are going to use that mic, and not return it, then you probably do need to think of going directly into a recorder.It’s not that difficult, just more things to remember. I do it all the time.
Another option is to get the new Mixpre-D which has the ability to do what you want, and give you monitoring capability. It’s as expensive as your camera though! (G).
Lastly, you can pick up the Rode Videopro Mic, which is a mini shotgun that allows you to throw a switch and bring in a signal that is less likely to have problems, but even that has some hiss.
Best is always sound into a real recorder. Remember, get a recorder that has a 48Hz capability.

That is interesting. I’m in the same boat, wondering about whether to buy the MkIII. Philip seems to say that it’s better, once you apply the sharpening filter to it.

It’s a very interesting problem. I’m in a car dealership waiting on a repair, using my Macbook Pro running Safari, and I don’t see it. When I posted it up on the web, using my desktop with Chrome, it most definitely was visible. I’ll have to check when I get back home. This has been a highly unusual situation. As to how I did this matte. I used a standard title, and used the ‘fill’ command to fill it. It shows that the size of the title is 1920×1080 so I assumed that the fill was filling that space. And it seemed to when I was editing the footage. When I rendered it was when I saw the issue of it not filling to the bottom of the screen, because the video was behind it. I worked around the issue by simply trimming the video behind it, but wanted to see if there was a bug happening that people might know about.

My buddy who does all my sound engineering swears by Logic Pro. He’s worried that Apple has abandoned the product, as updates don’t appear to be forthcoming. But EQ alone could be done on any of a lot of programs. If you already have Logic, go try it out.

Philip Bloom’s video review of the MKIII might have something for your question on the quality. He said that the anti-aliasing might be working against a great “out of the box” look to the footage, but that he found that applying a sharpening adjustment to it in Premiere for example, actually produced a much sharper image than the MKII could, and his examples are stunning. Take a look on Vimeo or at his blog site. It’s really worth a watch, and has convinced me to buy the camera as soon as I can.
As far as the size of the files, not sure on that one.

That’s true, and something we didn’t ask about. If you aren’t doing that, that could be the root cause of your problems. We sort of assumed you weren’t doing that.
