By the way, I think that John’s directions would work for 32 bit Vegas 10. My 10.c 64 bit required me to navigate to the
C:\Program Files\Sony\Vegas Pro 10.0 which are the 64 bit versions of the program. There was nothing under the 32 bit subdirectory he mentioned.

January 5, 2011 at 5:11 am in reply to: Vegas Pro 10.0c just released

Let’s bring any newbies up to the present…here’s the 10.x upgrade issues…this is GOOD news not a slam. I like a company that publishes what it fixes. This shows me that there are active Program Managers that are logging bugs, and developers who are prioritizing and fixing them. There are ALWAYS bugs in software, and always will be, a developer and test team CANNOT test every possible sceneario, so upgrading is preferable to not as long as you know the issues you face (ie. do you have enough RAM, etc.) Not all users will experience ALL of these problems. Some are unique to specific hardware situations, or things like AVCHD. I don’t work for or have any interest in Sony, but have worked for a major software company in the past, and know how the sausage gets made. It’s ugly folks…(G)

January 5, 2011 at 5:01 am in reply to: FCP wont recognize MXF files from Sony Vegas

I don’t think so, at this time, and as a person who has substantially used both platforms in the last year, I think I would have seen a useable path show up. I was told today by Boris that they are very soon likely to release something along these lines for those of us who find the day to day use of Vegas to be preferable to FCP, but occassionally need to play well with others in multi editor cross platform projects…not that we need to like it (G). Even Boris appears to be seeing Vegas to FCP requirements more and more in their customer base.

  • Agreed. Best of luck.

  • It seems you have enough power to drive Pluraleyes. Should it take that long???? My experiences were not near as long, though I didn’t run as many takes as you did… I’ve not experienced this long a churn. But yes, you’ve graduated to needing the 702t. Become a pro. Sounds like you are close already. Or an edirol??? Or just get a real HD camera with XLR in and record it properly to begin with? An AF100 might do the job. Do you really need a 7d or 5d to do this kind of simple recording? Ambitious might be a correct term, or using the right tool for the right job…I use my HMC 150 and Mixpre rather than my 7d for long running interviews. Or add an Edirol…Simplifies everything. You are working too hard for an interview….(G)

December 29, 2010 at 1:22 am in reply to: Using Vegas 10 with External Hard Drive

I assume you mean that you could see and access the files (meaning could even get info on them) but could not actually open them on the drive? What version of the OS? Did you just upgrade the OS also?

Try this: Open the new Vegas and create a simple file, save it to the external drive and try and open it up again.

It’s very odd, given that I too have a laptop, external SATA drive with it, and have no problems opening either 9 or 10 files I’ve created, either new or old. So my thinking is that your hardware is somehow to blame. Or an antivirus package?????

But if you can save a 9 file to the same external drive as the 10 files, and then reread it and even open it in 10, but can’t read a 10 file with 10 from this drive, there may be a certain bug with your configuration and Vegas. In that case, you might want to contact Sony support and open a bug report…

    Hope this helps!

December 28, 2010 at 6:21 am in reply to: 2 audio inputs, 3 mics

I’ll take a shot at a different approach (though I do have a Sound Devices field mixer as well and love it). Shift to a shotgun mic, mounted on a boom arm, just out of site of the camera, if possible, pointed right at two of the three. Or a proximity mic, on the table in front of them (?). Or just don’t worry about showing the mic, and put an omni on a small table tripod in front of them, aiming at them. Call it a documentary (G). Maybe you can hide it just below the camera frame? I’ve got a nice Russian Oktava, and the omni head is so good you can hear stuff two rooms away at 90 degrees! Or maybe by a MixPre and borrow a second one from a friend. Or buy a Mixpre and mix down two mics to one channel of mono, then run the third mic into the second channel of your XLR in on your camera…(G)…still should sound fine… Hope this helps!

December 28, 2010 at 6:13 am in reply to: Camera Advice

I really liked the Kodak Zi8 mentioned above. Easy to use. Shoots pretty well. Tripod mount standard. External mic but many times the internal worked swell. This video is a silly little thing I shot the day I bought the Kodak, for a friend who I was staying with, and she had just had her kitchen redone, and wanted to send a video of it to her brother. This was done just after charging the battery for the first time. Internal mic, handheld. It will give you a sample of what you can do, but a novice can screw it up even more but still get good footage. Just don’t blow it up to movie theater size! It does nice on Youtube, if that’s your delivery method, or maybe broadcast…it will look like a cheap camera.
