  • FCP wont recognize MXF files from Sony Vegas

Posted by Clint Jackson on January 4, 2011 at 11:12 pm

I am attempting to do the final edit on a project my client started in Vegas.

The workflow recommended to me was to export or render the project out of Vegas as MXF. Then using the free Sony Plugin XDCAM Transfer bring the files into Final Cut. But the files will not open up in XDCAM transfer. I also downloaded the Log & Transfer plugin but it will not recognize the files either.

Is the the correct workflow? If so, what am I missing?

How can I get the project from Vegas to FCP without quality loss?

    Frustrated & desperate,

    Clint

Log and Transfer is meant for bringing in footage from specific tapeless cameras — it’s not meant as a general tool for importing MXF media into FCP.

Have you tried the Calibrated{Q} MXF Import Quicktime component [link]?

Thanks. I will check it out Calibrated.

Is there a tried and true workflow for going from Vegas to Final Cut?

I don’t think so, at this time, and as a person who has substantially used both platforms in the last year, I think I would have seen a useable path show up. I was told today by Boris that they are very soon likely to release something along these lines for those of us who find the day to day use of Vegas to be preferable to FCP, but occassionally need to play well with others in multi editor cross platform projects…not that we need to like it (G). Even Boris appears to be seeing Vegas to FCP requirements more and more in their customer base.

    Can Vegas output an EDL?

This should work (at least for media), if you use a XDcam style MXF format on output.
The files then are identical to camera generated XDcam MXF, and the XDcam plugin on Mac won’t know the difference.

I do this all the time, although not from Vegas.
But since Vegas is Sony, it should be compatible.

Over here broadcast standard is Sony style MXF, and our national broadcaster uses Vegas for QC on commercials…
(and lot’s of people use FCP to EXPORT to MXF, intended for broadcast)

So, check what flavour of MXF the Vegas side is spitting out.
