If you just doing photos to music, have you considered using iPhoto. You can create them very quick and you have pan/scan (aka Ken Burns Effect). . . very effective way to do a photomontage to music. Plus, the added benefit, is that is quick!

November 16, 2009 at 10:12 pm in reply to: Fast way to organizing/labeling clips?

[Chris Gen] “With iMovie since everything is visual based, I can organize the clips in super fast time.”

You can set the Browser in FCP to display thumbnails of your video clips so you can see the poster frame for each clip. Do a right click or Control-Click in your browser and select view as icon form the drop down list.

[Chris Gen] “What’s the secret? What’s the fastest way to get your files organized so you can get into the fine-tuning work?”

Hire an intern and let them do the work. Having your clips properly labeled and logged will help you when you begin growing your business and your media files become used in multiple projects. If you have a good system of logging and naming your clips, the time you invest now will be made up in the future on other projects/work.

[Chris Gen] “I’m willing to pay for an advice here so if you have a good DVD you can recommend, please let me know. I’m just ordering the “Organizing in Final Cut Pro” video from this site.”

Check out Shane Ross’s video https://store.creativecow.net/p/63/getting_organized_in_final_cut_pro. It is a great resource.

Check to make sure you don’t have Anamorphic checked in the Browser window for the clip. It sounds like you imported the footage using an Anamorphic preset.

Highlight the sequence in your Browser window and right click>send to> Soundtrack Pro Multitrack Project. Final Cut will prepare the audio and video for STP, Launch STP and you can then make your adjustments.

If you are looking to do a subscriptions site for your video’s, I would recommend using WordPress for your content management and membership management. The plugin Wishlish Member is an amazing tool for managing access to content. It works with PayPal or any number of shopping carts/merchant accounts and is simple to use. If you have never used wordpress, you should check out the functionality of it and the ability to do what you want, simply!

WordPress is a GREAT tool to build and maintain a website if you don’t feel comfortable with code. It will do exactly what you want. You will need to add some plugins and flash players to optimize the site, but go with WordPress.

I would recommend you look a the jwplayer. It is an excellent flash player and can play H264 quicktime. This will ensure that 99+ of all views can view your file. It is free for non-commercial users.

August 13, 2009 at 7:21 pm in reply to: DVD delivery to client-What do you use?

We do short run duplication and we use a Primera printer/publisher to produce our DVD’s. It works great for small quantity, anything below 1000. You would also need a duplicator. Setup cost for equipment would run about $2000 on the cheap end upward of $10,000 for higher quality production. It depends on how many and how frequently your are producing DVD’s.

[Raven Plenty] “If I do a PSD file, it comes in stretched, unless I actually set up the Photoshop document with the DVDPRO HD pixel aspect ratio.”

You have to create the PSD with the correct pixel aspect ratio. Otherwise FCP is going to manipulate the image to fit.

If you use the correct settings in Photoshop, when you import the file into FCP it creates the .psd file as a sequence. If you double click the file, it opens the sequence and you can see each individual layer on separate tracks. You can adjust the parameters for each layer using the viewers motion tab to change aspect ratio via distort, scale, etc. Essentially you are creating a nested sequence when you load the .psd image into your timeline.

TIF files need to be merged or flattened and the alpha channel applied in order for them to come into FCP with a working alpha. This is done in Photoshop by merging all layers, selecting your selection tool, command-a to select all, hit the down arrow to cause your selection to include only the image, click the channels tab next to layers, and add an alpha by using the buttons on the bottom. Save the file as a .tif and import into FCP.

August 13, 2009 at 3:09 pm in reply to: Understanding peak audio levels

This is generally defined by the network broadcasting the show, not the producer who produced the show. We produce shows that air on two different networks and have different requirements for peak levels. One network requires -20db tone and allows peak levels to hit -6db. The other network requires -20db tone but limits peak levels to -10db with normal voice levels bouncing at/around -20db. So, levels for broadcast are largely defined by the network and they have production guidelines that you can obtain.
