Fast way to organizing/labeling clips?
Hi,
I’ve been using iMovie for a long time and I’m having the hardest time adjusting to Final Cut’s workflow when it comes to organizing clips and labeling them.
I just don’t have the time or see the need to label each clip that I import. But when it comes to editing all the clips are numbered and I can’t tell which is which unless I go through it and open them up. This is a huge time killer.
With iMovie since everything is visual based, I can organize the clips in super fast time. What used to take me 15 min is taking me over an hour and a half.
Does anybody have an advice on this process to a newbie? Surely, not all pros have the time to label each clip, and make subclips and re-name them right?
What’s the secret? What’s the fastest way to get your files organized so you can get into the fine-tuning work? I just need a fast way to put together a base story on timeline without re-watching the entire shoots you took.
I’m willing to pay for an advice here so if you have a good DVD you can recommend, please let me know. I’m just ordering the “Organizing in Final Cut Pro” video from this site.

You can set the Browser in FCP to display thumbnails of your video clips so you can see the poster frame for each clip. Do a right click or Control-Click in your browser and select view as icon form the drop down list.

Hire an intern and let them do the work. Having your clips properly labeled and logged will help you when you begin growing your business and your media files become used in multiple projects. If you have a good system of logging and naming your clips, the time you invest now will be made up in the future on other projects/work.

Thanks for the tip…I didn’t know that one. I agree though that doing the long form organizing is worth it at the end of the day. You get more familiar with your footage, you can label and organize it while naming it and it really saves me time while editing so I don’t end up spending so much time hunting down that “perfect” shot named by number. Thanks again.

Add up how long it will take you to properly label and organize your clips. Then add up how long it takes you to constantly search for the right clip while you’re editing. You’ll be surprised at how much time you actually save yourself by organizing your project correctly at the start.

You can rename your clips in the browser and control click to rename the source clips.
